To upgrade a weapon to Legendary in Elden Ring Nightreign, first raise it through the ordinary rarity tiers with Smithing Stones at a merchant’s anvil, then use the special smithing table in The Crater Shifting Earth event. The ordinary steps are Common to Uncommon with Smithing Stone 1, then Uncommon to Rare with Smithing Stone 2; PC Gamer identifies The Crater’s table as the Rare-to-Legendary route.
How weapon upgrades work
Bandai Namco’s official gameplay guide describes the basic system: merchants sell items and equipment, and Smithing Stones can be used at the anvil at their location to upgrade weapons. It also advises looking in tunnels for Smithing Stones.

The rarity sequence and the special Legendary step are detailed in PC Gamer’s upgrade guide:
| Current rarity | Upgrade material or location | Result |
|---|---|---|
| Common | Smithing Stone 1 at a merchant’s anvil | Uncommon |
| Uncommon | Smithing Stone 2 at a merchant’s anvil | Rare |
| Rare | Special smithing table in The Crater Shifting Earth event | Legendary |
Bandai Namco’s official guides confirm the general stone-and-anvil system, but do not describe the specific Crater table procedure; that Legendary route comes from PC Gamer’s guide.

How to prepare and upgrade during an Expedition
- Use the first two days to explore. Bandai Namco’s starter guide, published June 17, 2025, frames those days as time to explore Limveld and collect weapons, upgrade materials, and Runes.
- Search tunnels for Smithing Stones. The official gameplay guide points to tunnels as a place to obtain them.
- Find a merchant and use the anvil. Spend the appropriate Smithing Stone there to advance a Common or Uncommon weapon through its ordinary rarity step.
- Use The Crater’s special smithing table for the final step. When The Crater Shifting Earth event is available, bring a Rare weapon to its special table to pursue Legendary rarity, as described by PC Gamer.
Choose the weapon before spending materials
Rarity is not the only consideration. Bandai Namco notes that higher-rarity equipment has stronger stats and abilities, while equipment can also vary in Skills, Affinities, Status Ailments, and passive effects. A lower-rarity weapon whose effects fit your build may be more useful to you than an upgrade target with mismatched effects; weigh those traits before committing stones.

Merchant positions change between Expeditions, according to Bandai Namco’s starter guide. The guide says merchant stock includes a static set of upgrades such as Smithing Stones, while armaments are rerolled per mission. The sources do not establish how often The Crater appears, nor do they give stone drop rates, so neither a particular event appearance nor a material find is guaranteed in a given run.
