How to Transfer The Sims 4 to Another Computer

Install The Sims 4 on the new computer from the EA app using the EA account that owns the game, then manually copy the Sims 4 user files you want to keep. The EA app does not store these saves in cloud storage, so reinstalling the game alone will not move your progress.

What transfers—and what does not

The game installation and your personal game data are separate. Downloading The Sims 4 from your EA library installs the game, but you must copy local files from the old computer to preserve progress and creations. Electronic Arts’ The Sims 4 FAQ says the game does not support EA app cloud storage for saves and explains that you can copy the Saves directory between PC and Mac using a USB drive or other portable storage.

• Saves: Your game progress. Copy this folder if you want to continue existing save files.
• Tray: Saved households and builds. Include it if you want to keep those creations.
• Mods and custom content: If you use them, copy those user files too. You may need to ensure they are enabled in the new installation.

The game and packs are associated with the account that bought or registered them, according to an EA Forums support response. A save can depend on packs, so check that the destination account has access to the packs used in that save.

Transfer The Sims 4 step by step

1. Sign in with the owning EA account. On the new computer, use the account that owns The Sims 4 and any packs you need. EA’s FAQ describes an existing PC player moving to Mac signing in with the same account and downloading the game from the library.
2. Install and open the game once. Download The Sims 4 from the EA app library and launch it on the new computer. EA Forums support guidance recommends starting the new installation before copying user data.
3. Find the active user-data folder on the old computer. The usual location is Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4. If your Documents folder is redirected or synced elsewhere, the active folder may be in a different location. Use the folder associated with the game, not the installed program folder. See the EA Forums guidance on moving to a new computer.
4. Make a backup, then copy the files you need. Copy the Saves folder for progress and Tray for saved households and builds. Copy your mods or custom content folders if applicable. A USB flash drive or other portable storage is one option; another reliable file-transfer method is also fine.
5. Place the copied folders in the active Sims 4 user folder on the new computer. Keep the folder structure intact. Do not put save files in the game’s installation directory.
6. Open the game and verify the transfer. Check that the expected saves, households, and builds appear. Keep the original backup until you have confirmed the copied data works.

If your save does not appear

• Check that you copied Saves into the active user-data folder, rather than into the installed game files.
• If Documents is redirected or managed by a sync service, confirm that you used the folder The Sims 4 is currently reading.
• Confirm the destination account owns the game and that the required packs are available for any pack-dependent save.
• Make sure you copied the relevant folder rather than only the game installation. Reinstalling does not restore local save files through EA app cloud storage.

Platform and account notes

EA’s FAQ specifically covers moving saves between PC and Mac and recommends copying the Saves directory. The exact active folder can vary when a system redirects Documents, so use the destination game’s active Sims 4 user folder. The cited support guidance does not establish every launcher, operating-system, or cloud-sync configuration.
