LooksMenu adds character-creation and appearance tools to Fallout 4, including named facial-feature controls, preset saving and loading, overlays, and color adjustments. To use it, first install a LooksMenu file compatible with your exact Fallout 4 build and its required Fallout 4 Script Extender (F4SE) version; then use its appearance features in character creation or the in-game customization interface.
What LooksMenu adds
LooksMenu is an engine modification for Fallout 4 character creation. Its listed features include a larger set of visible character-creation options, facial features selectable by name, saving and loading character presets, overlays, skin and mesh overrides, and HSV colorization for skin and makeup. It also supports NPC BodyGen and BodySlide sliders that have been properly generated. The mod description lists these features.

LooksMenu provides the tools; it does not necessarily include the external body, hair, overlay, or texture assets that a particular preset or appearance setup uses. If a preset relies on other mods, those assets must be available separately.
Check your Fallout 4 and F4SE versions
LooksMenu requires F4SE. The required LooksMenu file is tied to the installed Fallout 4 build and the corresponding F4SE version, so do not choose a download solely because it is the newest entry or has the right aspect-ratio option.

The official LooksMenu files page showed separate compatibility examples on 1 September 2026: version 1.7.0.2 for a listed 21:9 option requires Fallout 4 1.11.191 and F4SE 0.7.7 or greater, while version 1.7.0.3 requires Fallout 4 1.11.221 and F4SE 0.7.8 or greater. These are examples for specific files, not general requirements for every installation; check the current file entry matching your game build.
- Identify the exact Fallout 4 version installed on your system.
- On the LooksMenu files page, find a file whose listed game requirement matches that build. Check whether an aspect-ratio variant is relevant to your setup.
- Check the F4SE requirement on that same entry, then install the corresponding F4SE release for your Fallout 4 build.
- Install the matching LooksMenu file using your usual Fallout 4 mod installation method. If the game or F4SE updates later, re-check the compatibility listing before assuming the installed DLL still matches.
Use LooksMenu for character appearance
Once the compatible mod is installed and loading, open Fallout 4’s character customization or character-creation interface. LooksMenu’s purpose is to expand those appearance controls: its documented options include a longer feature list, facial features chosen by name, overlays, skin overrides, and HSV color adjustments for skin and makeup. The exact available controls depend on the assets and other appearance mods installed alongside it.

LooksMenu also supports saving and loading presets. Use those options in the appearance interface to preserve or apply a character’s look. The official description confirms preset save/load support but does not specify a universal key sequence or the location for downloaded preset files, so do not assume a particular shortcut or folder path.

LooksMenu can expose BodySlide sliders in game when they have been properly generated. Installing LooksMenu alone does not generate those sliders: prepare them with the relevant BodySlide setup before expecting them to appear. NPC BodyGen support is also listed, but any required body or appearance resources remain dependent on the other mods used by your setup.

- If a slider is missing, first verify that it was generated properly in BodySlide.
