On Windows, macOS, Linux, and Steam Deck, the installer normally replaces and cleans up the previous SMAPI version, so you do not need to uninstall it first. Android uses a separate experimental port and its own update steps.
As of October 8, 2026, SMAPI.io lists version 4.5.2, which requires Stardew Valley 1.6.14 or later on Windows, macOS, Linux, and Steam Deck. The Android guide has different requirements: Stardew Valley 1.6.15.1 or later and a 64-bit operating system.
Before updating: check the game version and installation
Confirm that Stardew Valley is updated and that you know which copy of the game you launch. If you have more than one installation, the SMAPI installer can update a different copy from the one you normally play. The desktop release requirements and current version are listed on SMAPI.io; Android has separate requirements in its installation guide.
For a routine desktop update, you generally do not need to uninstall the old SMAPI version or reset Steam or GOG Galaxy launch settings. The new installer handles the previous version. First-time installation advice—such as running the unmodded game once—does not need to be repeated for every update.

Update SMAPI on Windows
- Download the latest release from SMAPI.io and extract the ZIP somewhere convenient, such as your Downloads folder.
- Open the extracted folder and run
install on Windows.bat. - Follow the installer prompts and choose the Stardew Valley installation you actually use if asked.
- Launch the game through Steam or GOG Galaxy as usual, or run
StardewModdingAPI.exein the game folder.
Ordinary SMAPI updates do not require reconfiguring Steam or GOG Galaxy if their existing launch setup still works. If the installer cannot locate the game, check the selected game path and confirm it is the copy you intend to update. See the Windows installation guide for platform-specific setup details.
Update SMAPI on Linux
- Download and extract the latest SMAPI release outside the Stardew Valley game folder.
- Make sure the Linux installer files are executable if your system requires it.
- Open a terminal in the extracted folder and run
install on Linux.sh. - Follow the prompts. The installer replaces the earlier SMAPI version.
The Linux installation guide includes additional instructions if the installer does not run as expected.
Update SMAPI on macOS
- Download and extract the latest release.
- In the extracted folder, right-click
install on Mac.commandand choose Open. - Follow the prompts to install the update.
If macOS blocks the installer, use the privacy and security steps in the macOS installation guide. Its current requirements specify macOS 10.15 Catalina or later for newer Stardew Valley versions that use .NET 6.
Update SMAPI on Steam Deck
Steam Deck has two distinct setups: Stardew Valley can run natively on Linux or through Proton. Identify which mode you use before installing SMAPI, because the installer and launch configuration differ.

Native Linux mode
Use the Linux SMAPI installer and follow the Linux instructions. The installer replaces the previous version.
Proton mode
Use the Windows SMAPI files and follow the guide’s manual installation and Steam setup instructions. Proton-mode saves do not automatically carry over to the modded save location, so do not assume a save will appear in both locations. The Steam Deck guide explains how to identify the mode and configure each path.

Update SMAPI on Android
Android uses a separate, experimental SMAPI port rather than the desktop release. The guide requires Stardew Valley 1.6.15.1 or later from the Play Store or Galaxy Store and a 64-bit operating system. Some mods may not work with this port.
- Download the Android SMAPI file described by the Android guide.
- Install or open the SMAPI Launcher.
- Choose Install SMAPI From Zip and select the newly downloaded SMAPI file.
- Wait for the success message, then start Stardew Valley from the launcher.
The launcher removes the previous version during this process, so repeat these installation steps when updating.

- Valve is entering the gaming console marketplace with the new Steam Deck, a console geared towards PC gamers. The Steam Deck can be docked to a monitor, and used as a PC, or docked to a TV.
- Players can play a huge variety of games at any time with the comfort of a console and the freedom of a PC. Not anti-glare screen.
- Like the name suggests, the Steam Deck will include upgraded 1TB storage, and will include a carrying case. A micro SD slot will also enable expanded storage.
- Valve partnered with AMD to create a specialized APU optimized for handheld gaming, and Valve says the chip will deliver performance to run AAA gaming titles.
- The Steam Deck is outfitted with a 7-inch touchscreen, and two trackpads under the control sticks that allow gamers to operate games never designed outside of mouse and keyboard capabilities.
If the SMAPI window no longer appears after a Stardew Valley update
- Rerun the SMAPI installer that matches your platform. The Linux and Steam Deck guides identify reinstalling as a fix when the SMAPI launcher stops appearing after a game update.
- Try launching Stardew Valley without SMAPI. If the base game will not start, resolve that issue first.
- Check that your installed SMAPI release supports your Stardew Valley version.
- Verify that the installer updated the same game folder you launch. Multiple game copies can make an update appear successful while leaving the active copy unchanged.
- On Steam Deck, confirm whether you use native Linux or Proton and install the corresponding SMAPI version.

If SMAPI starts but your mods report errors
Updating SMAPI does not update the mods installed in your game. Check each affected mod’s own page for a newer release or special upgrade instructions. The SMAPI compatibility list can help you check mods, but it says it is no longer comprehensively updated each month and its future is uncertain; treat it as a useful reference, not a guarantee that every listing is current.
SMAPI 4.5 adds in-game configuration, performance improvements, automated and attested builds, and malicious-file detection, among other changes. Version 4.5.1 fixed a Linux/macOS installer error; 4.5.2 primarily improves performance and fixes a color-scheme saving issue. Consult the official release information for details relevant to your installed version.
