Backyard Sports returned with two digital releases in 2025: Backyard Baseball ’01, listed on Steam as released July 8, and Backyard Football ’99, listed there as released September 8. The comeback followed Playground Productions’ 2024 announcement that it would revive the family-friendly franchise, which began with Backyard Baseball in 1997.
What is the franchise coming back?
It is Backyard Sports, the series of accessible sports games built around neighborhood kids and professional-athlete characters. The franchise began with Backyard Baseball in 1997 and later expanded to football, basketball, hockey and soccer, according to Sports Illustrated. Steam’s current franchise page also lists those five sports.
Playground Productions announced the franchise’s return in 2024. The company said it aimed to preserve the original games’ look and feel while updating features and gameplay. That describes the owner’s stated approach; it does not establish that every historical game or sport has been relaunched.
Which Backyard Sports games arrived in 2025?
| Game | Sport and original year | Steam-listed release date |
|---|---|---|
| Backyard Baseball ’01 | Baseball; 2001 edition | July 8, 2025 |
| Backyard Football ’99 | Football; 1999 edition | September 8, 2025 |
These are re-releases of named classic editions, not evidence that two wholly new games were created. Steam’s current franchise listing gives the titles and dates.

Where can you play the returning games?
The available sources establish digital distribution. Steam lists both titles, and GamingTrend reported that Backyard Football ’99 was available for preorder through the Apple App Store and Google Play, as well as for wishlisting on Steam. That report does not verify a physical console edition or an Amazon product listing.
GamingTrend described the relaunch games as work by Mega Cat Studios, adapting the original CD-ROM for modern devices. That is the outlet’s account of the development approach, not an independent compatibility or technical assessment. No verified system requirements, performance results, or supported-device details are established here.

Why do reports give different Football ’99 launch dates?
Steam lists Backyard Football ’99 as released September 8, 2025, while GamingTrend’s September 2, 2025 report said it would launch September 9. The available sources do not explain the one-day discrepancy. If you need the storefront’s listed date, Steam gives September 8; the precise reason for the difference is not established.
Who is involved in the return?
Playground Productions is the company behind the announced revival. In Sports Illustrated’s 2024 report, chief product officer Chris Waters said the company was taking care to keep the original look and feel while updating features and gameplay.

GamingTrend reported that returning professional players in Backyard Football ’99 include Barry Sanders, Dan Marino, Drew Bledsoe, Jerry Rice, John Elway, Randall Cunningham and Steve Young. Treat that as the outlet’s reported list rather than an independently checked roster.
The relaunch should not be credited to Jason Kelce. Sports Illustrated reported that Kelce had said on his podcast that he explored buying rights to Backyard Baseball and Backyard Football, but also reported that sources confirmed he was not connected to Playground Productions’ reboot.

What the 2025 comeback does—and does not—mean
The concrete return was the arrival of two digital editions in 2025: baseball’s ’01 and football’s ’99. The franchise spans more sports, but the cited release listings do not establish that every older entry has returned. Nor do these sources verify a physical edition, current merchandise availability, pricing, gameplay quality, or compatibility details.
