During Diablo 4’s Season of the Construct, you upgraded the Seneschal by leveling its Governing and Tuning Stones—not by raising a separate companion level. Fuse duplicate copies of a stone to grant experience and improve the stone you keep. The Seneschal and this upgrade system are described as seasonal; the sources cited here do not confirm their availability in the current game version.
How Seneschal upgrades worked
Each stone type had its own role. A Governing Stone determined an attack the Seneschal performed, while Tuning Stones modified that attack or added utility. Fusing duplicates granted experience to the selected stone, eventually raising its level. Higher levels could increase an effect’s potency; some Tuning Stones gained projectiles or changed damage type as they leveled.

Blizzard’s Season of the Construct overview listed 12 Governing Stone types and 27 Tuning Stone types. Those are counts of available types, not rankings of their strength.
Upgrade and equip your stones
- Acquire stones: During the seasonal content, earn Governing and Tuning Stones from activities and rewards available in the season.
- Collect duplicates: Gather copies of the particular stone you want to level. Blizzard also described crafting stones from materials.
- Fuse duplicates: Fuse copies of the selected stone to grant it experience and raise its level.
- Assign your stones: Equip two Governing Stones to set the Seneschal’s attacks, then assign up to three Tuning Stones to augment each one—six Tuning Stone slots in total.
- Choose for your build: Select attacks and modifications for the role you want the companion to fill. Stone levels can strengthen effects, but the official guide does not establish a universally best combination.
Where stones and crafting materials came from
Blizzard’s Season of the Construct overview listed Vault completions as a source of a random Tuning Stone, alongside Wardwoven Chests and Season Journey rewards. It also described low-chance stone drops from Vaults and Arcane Tremors. Defeating Constructs in Vaults yielded Shattered Stone, which could be used at Jewelers to craft Governing and Tuning Stones.

Blizzard’s 2024 Season 3 patch notes later changed some rewards and crafting costs. The notes added Whispers as a stone reward, specified two to three Governing and Tuning Stones from Son of Malphas, increased Seneschal Stone Cache rewards from one to two stones, and reduced experience requirements. They set crafting at 200 Shattered Stone plus 20 Iron Chunks per stone, regardless of level. These are historical patch details, not confirmed current-game rules.

Blizzard presented the Seneschal as a seasonal companion that followed players until Season of the Construct ended. The official material cited here explains its original seasonal upgrade mechanics but does not establish whether the companion, stones, or crafting system can be accessed in the current Diablo 4 version. Treat these steps and reward details as historical Season of the Construct instructions unless current availability is confirmed in-game.
