No—preordering a Nintendo Switch 2 doesn’t mean you need to rush out for its new Pro Controller. Nintendo says the original Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Switch 2, so an upgrade is optional. The new model makes sense if you want its GameChat shortcut, assignable rear buttons, or headset jack.
Should you buy the Switch 2 Pro Controller right away?
Buy it if its particular features solve a problem for you; otherwise, you can start with the controller you already own. Nintendo’s compatibility guidance says the original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller can pair wirelessly with Switch 2. The official material does not establish a preorder-related deadline or say that Switch 2 owners need the new controller.
The compatibility works in one direction: the original Pro Controller can pair with Switch 2, but Nintendo says the Switch 2 Pro Controller is only for Switch 2. It cannot be used with the original Nintendo Switch. Nintendo’s FAQ states: “No. The Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller is only for use with Nintendo Switch 2.” Nintendo Switch 2 Pro Controller FAQ · Nintendo’s Switch and Switch 2 compatibility guidance
What the new controller adds
C Button for GameChat
Pressing the dedicated C Button opens the GameChat menu. That is a direct shortcut for players who expect to use GameChat; it is not evidence that the new controller is required to access the feature.

- Capture Button
- C Button for GameChat**
Assignable GL and GR rear buttons
The GL and GR buttons can be assigned other button inputs. Nintendo developers say assignments are saved for each game and each player. This can suit players who want extra remapping options or prefer to reach a control without moving a thumb from a stick. The buttons are an added customization option, not a guarantee of better performance.
Headphone and headset jack
The controller has an audio jack for headphones or headsets. Consider this if you want a wired audio connection through the controller.

Revised sticks and grip
Nintendo developer Takuhiro Dohta describes the new sticks as quieter, including when moved quickly to the edge, and says the grip shape was redesigned. Those are Nintendo’s qualitative product descriptions, not findings from an independent comparison or lab test.
