If Dune: Awakening crashes, freezes, or will not launch on PC, start with Steam’s file check, free disk space, and background apps, then check your Windows and graphics driver. The right fix depends on when the failure occurs: Funcom documents specific cases involving shader compilation, AMD Adrenalin 26.6.2, and NVIDIA DLSS used with Overwolf. No single step is a universal fix.

Start with reversible checks

Funcom says technical problems can have different causes. Try these basic checks before changing configuration files or firmware:

  1. Verify the game files in Steam. Open your Steam Library, right-click Dune: Awakening, choose Properties > Installed Files, then select Verify integrity of game files. Let Steam finish and repair any files it identifies. This checks the installation; it does not guarantee a fix.
  2. Check the installation drive. Make sure it is not full. Funcom’s current system requirements specify an SSD and 60 GB of available storage at minimum.
  3. Close resource-heavy apps. Exit other applications that are using substantial CPU or GPU resources, then try launching the game again.
  4. Check Windows and your graphics driver. Funcom recommends updating both. Before installing a graphics driver, check the known-issues section below: the newest driver is not automatically the right choice if Funcom lists it as a conflict.

See Funcom’s crashing, freezing, and slow-performance guidance for its general checklist.

Check whether your PC meets the requirements

Funcom’s requirements page lists the following PC specifications. Its listed requirements can change, so check the official system requirements if you are troubleshooting later.

Clear the shader cache using the steps for your GPU

Funcom recommends clearing the shader cache as part of its troubleshooting guidance. Use only the steps for your graphics vendor and the specified cache location.

Crash before the menu while shaders compile

Funcom documents a CPU-use limit for crashes during shader compilation. Open %userprofile%AppDataLocalDuneSandboxSavedConfigWindowsClientGame.ini and find the [Settings.Video] section. Set LimitProcessCpuUsage=1 under that section; if the setting is absent, add it. This can reduce client performance while improving system stability. Follow Funcom’s shader-compilation instructions.

Shader-compilation “Out of memory” error on a 13th- or 14th-generation Intel CPU

For this specific error on an Intel 13th- or 14th-generation CPU, Funcom recommends updating the motherboard BIOS. Its guidance calls for microcode 0x12B or later, with 0x12F preferred. BIOS procedures vary by motherboard; use its manufacturer’s instructions and get competent help if you are unsure. Funcom’s shader-compilation article gives the game-specific guidance. The known-issues page also describes startup crashes on these Intel generations as CPU instability under load.

Crashes with AMD Adrenalin 26.6.2

Funcom’s known-issues list, updated September 28, 2026, says AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 26.6.2 can cause crashes and recommends rolling back to an earlier driver. Check the live known-issues page before changing drivers, since driver conflicts and recommended versions can change.

Crashes with NVIDIA DLSS and Overwolf

Funcom lists a crash involving NVIDIA DLSS together with the Overwolf overlay. Try turning DLSS off in the game or closing or disabling Overwolf, then test again. The documented conflict concerns the combination; it does not establish that DLSS alone or Overwolf alone always causes crashes. Check Funcom’s known issues for updates.

If the whole PC freezes, not just the game

A game-only crash and a hard system freeze are different symptoms. If the entire PC becomes unresponsive, Funcom advises waiting 30–60 seconds so crash reporting has time to prepare and send a report before you force a restart. Its hard-freeze guidance lists drivers, Windows, and hardware as possible contributors to recurring freezes.

  • Make sure the power supply provides adequate wattage for the system.

Contact Funcom if the checks do not help

When reporting the problem, include a clear description and screenshots of any error displayed; Funcom explicitly requests these. Add details that can help distinguish the failure: when it occurs (before launch, during shader compilation, at the menu, or in a game session), your hardware, graphics-driver version, recent system or driver changes, and which troubleshooting steps you tried. You can start from Funcom’s crash-help page or the Steam technical-issue page.
