If the problem began after an update and you use mods, disable them temporarily and test again. The right next step depends on when the failure happens; one symptom alone does not identify its cause.
1. Update the game before troubleshooting
Check for the latest version available on your platform and install it before testing. The official Steam announcement archive listed Patch 2.0.6 on September 18, 2026; GSC said it backported several AMD GPU-related crash fixes and addressed other high-priority crashes. Patch availability can vary by platform, and the fixes do not establish that every crash has been resolved. Check GSC’s Steam announcement archive.
Earlier updates also addressed specific launch and GPU-related crashes. That history is a reason to check for updates, not proof that an older patch note explains a current problem. Review the official patch announcements.
2. Compare your PC with the published requirements
Steam’s published requirements describe target configurations, not a guarantee of smooth performance or a diagnosis of a particular crash. Compare your Windows version, RAM, GPU class, free storage, storage type, resolution, graphics preset, and frame-rate target with the listed tiers.

These figures are Steam’s published specification listing, not results from a performance test. See the Steam requirements listing. If the game is installed on a hard drive or your PC has no SSD storage, the SSD requirement is a point to check. Moving the game to an SSD may bring the setup in line with that requirement, but it is not an established fix for crashes or stuttering on a PC that already meets it.
3. If the issue began after an update, test without mods
If you use mods and instability or performance problems started after a game update, temporarily disable the mods and retry. GSC gave this update-specific recommendation in its September 18, 2026 Patch 2.0.6 announcement: “If you have performance or stability issues following the release of a new update, we recommend you to disable your mods.” Read the announcement.

Test the game in the same situation that previously caused the issue. If it works without mods, re-enable them cautiously to identify whether a mod or combination is involved; if the problem remains, continue with the checks below.
4. Pin down when the crash or stutter happens
Note the point at which the problem occurs and whether it started after a patch. GSC has documented distinct fixes over time, but a matching symptom does not confirm that the same bug is affecting your PC.

- Crash on launch: Confirm the game is updated. Official patch history includes targeted launch-crash fixes, but does not show that all launch failures share one cause. Check the patch archive.
- Crash or freeze during shader compilation: GSC’s March 10, 2025 Patch 1.1.4 note says it fixed shader-compilation crashes and freezes. If the problem persists on your current build, report it through the Tech Support Hub rather than assuming the historical fix applies to your case. GSC wrote: “Please, if your particular shader compilation issue is still present — let us know via our Tech Support Hub.” Read the Patch 1.1.4 note.
- Problems tied to a location, long play session, or combat: The same March 10, 2025 Patch 1.1.4 note listed a Rostok memory leak, performance degradation when shooting or aiming on long-playtime saves, and a random UI-animation crash among its fixes. Those are dated addressed cases, not a diagnosis of a current save or PC.
- Issues that appeared after a patch: If mods are installed, disable them first as described above. Otherwise, record the game version and the conditions that reproduce the issue for your support report.
5. Contact GSC if the problem continues
If updating, checking requirements, and testing without mods do not resolve the issue, submit the details to GSC’s Technical Support Hub. Include your platform/store, game version, PC specifications, when the problem occurs, and any steps that reliably reproduce it. GSC’s Patch 2.0.6 announcement also directs players there when update-related performance or stability issues continue. See the announcement.
