“Save your game” on Roblox can mean saving a place you are building in Roblox Studio or keeping progress in an experience you are playing. To save a Studio creation, save or publish it through Studio’s File menu, or export a local copy. To keep player progress between sessions, the experience’s developer must implement saving; there is no universal player-side command that forces every Roblox game to save.
Save a game you are building in Roblox Studio
Studio’s save and publish options upload place data to Roblox. A local export creates a separate file on your computer, useful as a backup or for version control. Choose the option that matches what you need:

Keep progress in a Roblox experience you are playing
Whether progress, inventory, or settings carry over after you leave depends on the experience. Its developer must implement data persistence, commonly with Roblox’s DataStoreService. Roblox says data stores persist information across sessions and are consistent across places within the same game, including places on different servers. If an experience does not save the relevant data, it may reset when you leave. See Roblox’s Data stores documentation.

There is no general save button or player setting that can make an experience save data if its developer has not built that feature. Check the experience’s menus or instructions for a save option, and allow any in-game save or checkpoint process to finish before leaving. If progress still disappears, the experience may not support saving that progress; contact its developer through the experience’s available support channels.

For developers implementing persistence, Roblox’s guidance has several important safeguards:

- Access data stores from the server. Data stores are held by Roblox’s backend, not on a player’s device. Use a server-side
Script; client-side access is blocked. See Save player data with standard data stores and Data stores. - Do not rely only on a save when a player leaves. Unexpected disconnects can prevent leave-time handling from saving the latest progress. Roblox Creator Hub warns: “If you only save the player’s data when they leave the game with onPlayerRemoving, you might lose their latest progress if they unexpectedly disconnect from the server.”
- Use periodic saves as well as leave and shutdown handling. Roblox’s tutorial calls 30–120 seconds a good autosave interval, depending on how quickly players earn valuable progress, and its example uses 30 seconds. Its broader best-practices guidance includes a sample implementation with a 180-second periodic interval. These are implementation examples and recommendations, not a universal required interval; select an interval appropriate to the experience and data-store request limits. - Save at important events. Roblox recommends saving periodically, when a player leaves, during server shutdown, and at critical checkpoints such as purchase processing. The right design should also handle failed or delayed requests and avoid conflicting saves when a player rejoins or teleports before a previous server finishes saving. BindToCloseto save unsaved data when a server shuts down, as described in the DataModel reference.
Test data stores safely in Studio
Studio does not access data stores by default. To test, enable Enable Studio Access to API Services in the experience’s Security settings. Roblox warns that Studio access can use the same data stores as the live client application, so do not enable it on a live experience; use a separate test version instead.
