The Hylian Shield is in a chest at the Docks beneath Hyrule Castle. Reach the dock opening on the northwest side of the castle moat, follow the path and stairs to the large unlit torch, then light it to reveal the chest.
How to reach the Docks beneath Hyrule Castle
You can approach the opening by raft from the water or glide into it from a high point. The route is described in Nintendo Life’s Hylian Shield guide; it says you can make the attempt after obtaining the Paraglider, which it associates with unlocking Lookout Landing Skyview Tower.
Option 1: Take a raft through the moat
- Head to the northwest side of Hyrule Castle and locate the moat opening leading toward the Docks.
- Drop to the water and use available wood and sails to build a raft.
- Ride the raft through the opening into the dock area.
Option 2: Glide into the opening
- Reach a high enough point to glide toward the northwest moat opening.
- Glide through the opening into the Docks.
A secondary map guide lists the chest at coordinates (-0154, 1157, 0037). Treat these as that guide’s map coordinates; following the moat opening and dock route does not depend on them. Zelda Dungeon’s interactive map
How to reveal the chest
- From the dock entrance, follow the path and climb the ramp and stairs toward the upper area.
- Watch for Gloom Hands on the way up. Nintendo Life’s guide suggests running past them, gliding over them, or waiting from a pillar until they despawn; these are its recommended tactics.
- At the top, find the large unlit torch. Light it with a fire source, or transfer a flame from one of the smaller torches.
- The chest rises from the ground. Open it to collect the Hylian Shield.
Shield defense, durability and replacement
Gamer Guides lists the Hylian Shield at 90 defense and says it can break. It also reports that, after completing The Mayoral Election Side Adventure, you can buy a replacement from Cece’s Private Collection for 3,000 rupees. These item details come from a secondary game guide, rather than an official Nintendo item-stat page. Gamer Guides’ Hylian Shield entry
