To turn on subtitles in Minecraft Bedrock, open Settings > Accessibility > Gameplay and enable Closed Captions. That is the name Minecraft uses for the feature, which displays real-time descriptions of nearby game sounds with directional cues.
Turn on closed captions in Minecraft Bedrock
- Open Settings in Minecraft Bedrock.
- Select Accessibility.
- Select Gameplay.
- Switch on Closed Captions.
Minecraft’s official instructions give this menu path. “Subtitles” is a common name for the feature, but the setting is labeled “Closed Captions” in the game.

What the captions show
Closed captions describe nearby sounds and events in real time. They cover game audio such as footsteps, doors opening, and mob sounds—not just spoken dialogue. Directional cues are intended to help you locate where a sound is coming from. Minecraft also lists closed captions among Bedrock’s accessibility features on its Accessibility page.
Adjust the caption display
After enabling captions, you can customize how long they remain visible, where they appear on the HUD, and which sounds are shown. These controls let you make captions easier to read or reduce on-screen clutter.

If captions look wrong or become hard to follow
Minecraft’s July 1, 2026 feature announcement describes closed captions as an evolving feature and notes that some sounds may be captioned incorrectly or inconsistently. Directional cues can also be difficult to interpret in vertical spaces, and captions may clutter the screen during busy moments. If you encounter a missing or incorrect caption, Minecraft invites feedback at feedback.minecraft.net.
The announcement also reports qualitative player feedback that captions can help people notice off-screen sounds and feel more aware in dangerous situations. It does not provide a quantified study or a device-by-device compatibility or minimum-version list, so those points should not be read as measured outcomes or guarantees for every platform.
