To unlock the base-game content in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, collect coins for ordinary vehicle parts and the Gold Glider, then complete separate Grand Prix and Time Trial challenges for Gold Mario, the Gold Standard kart, and Gold Tires. The Booster Course Pass courses and characters are additional DLC: they do not unlock through those coin milestones or base-game challenges.
How ordinary vehicle parts unlock
Kart bodies, tires, and gliders from the standard parts pool unlock at coin milestones, in a random order. A secondary reference reports that early milestones award one part every 30 coins and that the standard pool is exhausted by 2,800 coins; because the sequence is random, there is no reliable way to target a particular part by choosing a race. See Super Mario Wiki’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe reference for the milestone details.

The Gold Glider is a separate coin reward: collect 5,000 total coins. The standard parts pool may be finished first, so keep earning coins if the Gold Glider is still missing. The threshold is reported by the secondary guide Nintendo Life’s gold unlock guide.
How to unlock the four gold rewards
The gold rewards do not share one unlock condition. The following requirements refer to the base game’s cups and Time Trial ghosts, not Booster Course Pass content. They are reported by Nintendo Life’s guide; they are not presented here as wording from a consolidated Nintendo unlock table.

What the Booster Course Pass adds
Nintendo’s Booster Course Pass FAQ describes 48 additional remastered courses released in six waves and eight additional playable characters across those waves. The Wave 6 characters are Funky Kong, Diddy Kong, Pauline, and Peachette. These tracks and characters are DLC content, not ordinary coin unlocks or part of the base-game gold checklist.
Buy the pass or access it through membership
The full Mario Kart 8 Deluxe game is required. Nintendo says the Booster Course Pass can be purchased separately or accessed at no additional cost with a paid Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack membership. A separately purchased pass can be played indefinitely; access through the membership lasts only while the qualifying membership is active. If that membership ends, continued access requires buying the pass or having a new qualifying membership. Check Nintendo’s FAQ for current regional availability and pricing.

Credits after adding DLC
Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe update history documents different credits conditions depending on DLC access. This is a historical update note, so check the game’s current version before relying on it:
Quick Recap
- With the Booster Course Pass: clear every DLC Grand Prix cup in third place or higher to view the credits. For later viewings, clear Moon Cup or Spiny Cup in third place or higher.
- Without the pass: first race on DLC courses in Online or Wireless Play at least 100 times, then clear a random Grand Prix cup in third place or higher. For later viewings, clear Bell Cup in third place or higher.
Choose the task that matches your missing unlock
- Missing a standard body, tire, or glider? Keep earning coins; the part order is random.
- Missing Gold Mario or Gold Standard? Work through the relevant 200cc or Mirror Grand Prix cups.
- Missing Gold Tires? Focus on all 48 base-game staff ghosts in 150cc Time Trials.
- Missing Gold Glider? Check your total coins and continue until you reach 5,000.
- Looking for DLC tracks or characters? You need the Booster Course Pass access route; coins and base-game cup results will not unlock them.
