Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Hydra Slayer is a turn-based roguelike built around a precise arithmetic puzzle: each weapon removes a set number of heads, and a living hydra may regrow a different number. Winning depends on choosing the right weapons in the right order, then building a useful arsenal over the course of a run.
How does Hydra Slayer work?
The Steam listing frames the game with a nine-headed hydra and three weapons. A flaming longsword removes exactly five heads; if the hydra survives, two grow back. A storm scythe removes exactly seven, but ten grow back if the hydra remains alive. A silver dagger removes one head, while five grow back if the hydra survives. The challenge is to calculate a sequence that reaches zero rather than simply choosing the weapon with the largest cut.
The listing’s example is: nine heads, longsword, six; longsword, three; dagger, seven; scythe, zero. The dagger temporarily increases the head count, but that move sets up the final strike. As the developer-authored store description puts it, “The unique combat mechanics of Hydra Slayer are based on the puzzle above.” Steam’s Hydra Slayer listing presents this as the central idea behind combat.
Why weapon order matters
Each attack is a turn in a deterministic counting problem: account for the weapon’s cut, then apply regrowth if the hydra is still alive. A weapon that seems harmful can be useful if its regrowth leaves the hydra at a number another weapon can finish. The relevant question is not just “How many heads does this weapon remove?” but “What count will remain after the whole effect resolves, and what can I use next?”

What is the strategy beyond a single fight?
Solving one encounter is only part of the planning. The store description emphasizes both tactical choices during fights and longer-term weapon-synergy planning within a limited inventory. Players need to consider which tools to keep available and how their effects can combine, not merely react to the hydra in front of them.
The game also layers in varied equipment, magical items, enemies, and level layouts. The Steam version listing describes traps that can be used to lead hydras, as well as orbs that provide repeated powder or potion effects while occupying a weapon slot. That trade-off makes inventory choices part of the tactical picture: an item can offer ongoing utility while taking space that might otherwise go to a weapon.

Is Hydra Slayer a roguelike?
Yes. Steam describes Hydra Slayer as “Not really a deckbuilder, but still fully a roguelike.” The listing categorizes it under RPG and strategy, while user tags include traditional roguelike, puzzle, education, inventory management, turn-based, procedural generation, and tactics. Those tags are store metadata, not a formal genre taxonomy; the game’s own description makes clear that deckbuilding is not its defining identity.
Steam lists the game as developed and published by Zeno Rogue, with a release date of March 24, 2016. The page describes a tutorial and reports five player races with distinct characteristics, 28 enemy types, 28 equipment types before material and size variations, 15 weapon materials, 18 magical-item types, three game geometries, eight topologies on deep levels, 11 level generators, and two endings. These are publisher-provided content counts on the listing, not independently audited totals. The two endings are described as a smaller victory suited to quick challenges or more casual play, and a bigger victory for a greater challenge.

What are the standard game and challenge mode like?
The Steam description distinguishes regular play from a short challenge mode. Standard play is presented as the longer run with progression; challenge mode is intended for shorter, more unpredictable games. The listing also says the Steam version includes online achievements and leaderboards. Store features and availability can change, so check the live Steam page for current platform details and requirements.

Hydra Slayer is a natural fit for players who enjoy turn-based puzzles, careful inventory decisions, and planning several moves ahead. Its defining hook is not fast action or collecting cards: it is understanding how exact weapon effects transform a head count, then assembling an arsenal that can handle the next encounter. Players looking for a conventional action roguelike may find that unusual arithmetic focus a very different kind of challenge.
