There is no single vanilla setting that turns off every kind of fog in Minecraft. In Java Edition, increase Render Distance to push ordinary distance fog farther away. In Bedrock Edition, switch away from Vibrant Visuals if that graphics mode is causing the effect; for fog confined to one world or biome, check its packs and settings instead.
First identify what kind of fog you are seeing
- Terrain fades at the edge of view: This is usually tied to render distance. Increasing that setting can move the visible boundary outward, but it does not necessarily remove fog altogether.
- Atmospheric effects appeared after enabling Vibrant Visuals: This points to a Bedrock graphics-mode effect. Switching to another available graphics mode turns off Vibrant Visuals, though it will not remove fog from every source.
- Only one world, biome, or Marketplace experience is foggy: The world may use custom biome or resource-pack fog, or a command-added fog setting. Ask the world owner or administrator to check.
- Fog appears in water, lava, powder snow, or bad weather: Bedrock supports distinct fog contexts for these conditions, so a general graphics change may not affect them.
Turn down distance fog in Java Edition
- Open Options > Video Settings.
- Increase Render Distance a few increments and check whether the visible boundary moves farther away.
- If you use a shader, mod, or resource pack and the fog started after installing it, temporarily disable it to see whether it is contributing to the effect.
Higher Render Distance can affect performance, and the available range depends on your setup. Mojang’s Java Edition 1.18.1 release notes say world fog was changed to start farther from the player and to use a cylindrical rather than spherical volume. The official Java material reviewed does not document a vanilla menu option that disables all distance fog.

Java snapshot 25w44a documents visual fog start/end distance attributes and says sky fog distance is restricted by the Render Distance option. These are version-sensitive snapshot details, not a general menu path for players: Mojang’s 25w44a notes.
Reduce fog effects in Bedrock Edition
Switch away from Vibrant Visuals
- From the title screen, open Settings > Video > Graphics Mode.
- If Vibrant Visuals is selected, choose another graphics mode that is available on your device.
Minecraft Help explains how to change graphics mode and notes that Vibrant Visuals may be unavailable on systems that do not meet its requirements: Vibrant Visuals Graphics Mode. If you are already in a world, you may need to save and exit, then change the setting from the launch screen. Detailed visual controls and their labels can vary by device and version; the official guidance does not establish a universal volumetric-fog-off control.

Check fog that belongs to a particular world
If changing graphics mode does not help, inspect the world’s active resource packs or ask its owner to check biome settings. Bedrock fog can be defined for distance and volumetric effects, and may vary across air, water, lava, powder snow, and weather. Microsoft’s documentation describes these fog definitions and their settings: Introduction to fog.
Remove a fog setting added by a command
Bedrock commands can push a fog setting onto a player’s active fog stack. If you know the ID of the setting that was pushed, an administrator can use /fog pop to remove the top matching pushed setting or /fog remove to remove matching settings by ID. These commands do not clear every possible fog source. Command-added settings persist across world loads; see Microsoft’s Bedrock fog command reference.

Why one fix may not remove all fog
In Bedrock, fog can come from several layers, including commands, biomes, data defaults, and engine defaults. A command setting can take precedence over biome settings, while missing values may fall through to a lower-priority layer. Resource packs can define distance, color, and volumetric properties. The fog documentation explains the stack and how these sources interact: Microsoft Learn’s fog introduction.
Fog also helps hide view-distance boundaries, such as unloaded chunks beyond render distance, as well as create atmosphere. That is why increasing Render Distance can push some fog outward without eliminating environmental or world-defined fog: Microsoft Learn.
