Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is broadly well-reviewed for its spectacular combat, strong performance and Zelda-focused story, but its missions can feel repetitive and its battle spaces linear. It is best suited to players who enjoy Musou-style crowd combat and want more of the ancient-Hyrule history behind The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

What is Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment?

Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment is a Nintendo Switch 2 exclusive released on November 6, 2025. Nintendo describes it as a retelling of the Imprisoning War and Demon King Ganondorf’s invasion. As a prequel to Tears of the Kingdom, it expands on the ancient-Hyrule events presented in that game’s flashbacks. Nintendo lists a physical edition on its official product page.

What do critics like about it?

Reviews praise the scale and energy of the action, along with combat that gives players more to do than simply sweep through crowds. Nintendo Life highlighted how the game brings Musou combat together with Zelda storytelling, and viewed it as a showcase for Switch 2. TechRadar and GamesRadar+ also praised the action and performance.

The story is a major part of the appeal for Zelda fans. Critics describe the game as a story-focused addition to the series’ lore, giving more context to Tears of the Kingdom’s account of the Imprisoning War. Players who wanted that history expanded into a full adventure have a clear reason to be interested.

What are the main criticisms?

Mission variety and map design

The most consistent reservation is that missions and battle spaces can feel linear or repetitive. GamesRadar+ criticized the mission design and underused areas; Metacritic’s critic page also includes an excerpt pointing to bland map layouts. This matters most if you want battles to offer varied routes, layouts or objectives rather than a steady succession of familiar encounters.

Bosses and defensive battles

TechRadar flagged spongey bosses and defensive missions that can feel like busy work. Those complaints point to a pacing trade-off: the game delivers large-scale action, but not every encounter has the same momentum or sense of variety.

Co-op caveat

One excerpt on Metacritic’s critic page raises a co-op limitation. The available review summary does not establish enough detail to describe the limitation more specifically, so players considering co-op should consult the game’s current official product information and individual reviews before buying.

TechRadar Not stated in the available review summary Praised combat and performance; estimated a playthrough at around 30 hours, while noting boss and defensive-battle drawbacks.
GamesRadar+ Not stated in the available review summary Praised action and performance, but criticized linear, repetitive mission design and underused areas.

Metacritic’s critic reviews page collects favorable comments on combat depth, roster, story and presentation, alongside reservations about layouts and co-op. Taken together, the critical picture is positive, though not a blanket endorsement of the mission design.

Is it worth playing if you liked Tears of the Kingdom?

It is a stronger fit if what you want is more context for the ancient events in Tears of the Kingdom and you also enjoy Musou games: action titles built around fighting large groups of enemies. The story connection is a meaningful draw, but the moment-to-moment play remains crowd-combat action rather than a conventional open-world Zelda adventure.

If you primarily value exploration, open battlefields or a high degree of mission-to-mission variety, the recurring criticism of linear and repetitive layouts deserves more weight. If spectacle, combat and a lore-rich prequel matter more, the reviews suggest those strengths are likely to outweigh the uneven mission structure.

Who should buy it?

  • Good fit: Zelda fans who want an expanded version of the Imprisoning War story and enjoy fighting waves of enemies.
  • Good fit: Switch 2 players looking for large-scale action with a strong emphasis on presentation and series lore.
  • Think twice: Players who need varied mission layouts, open-ended battle spaces or consistently fresh objectives.
  • Check first: Anyone buying mainly for co-op, since a critic excerpt flags a limitation without enough detail here to define it.

For platform and edition details, see Nintendo’s official product page. The game is a Switch 2 title; do not assume the physical edition works on the original Nintendo Switch.
