If your Logitech G27 keeps changing the gear it reports, first check whether the input is unstable outside the game. That separates a likely shifter or connection problem from a car setting or control-binding issue. The symptom alone does not prove that one specific part has failed.
First check whether the game allows H-pattern shifting
Some cars use sequential or dog-box transmissions, and a game may disable H-pattern shifting for them. Confirm that the selected car supports a manual H-pattern gearbox, then review the game’s shifter bindings. Logitech’s G27 troubleshooting material notes this transmission-related possibility.
Test the shifter input outside the game
Use the operating system’s controller panel or wheel software available on your system, if either exposes the shifter’s inputs. Move the lever through each gear and watch whether each position registers consistently and distinctly. There is no single universal utility established for every operating system.
- Inputs flicker or show the wrong gear outside the game: investigate the shifter connection and hardware.
- Inputs are stable outside the game: focus on the selected car’s transmission type and the game’s control bindings.
Check the shifter connection
Disconnect the shifter from the wheel base, reconnect it firmly, and test again. If the cable and plug are accessible, look for visible damage. This is a practical isolation step, not a guaranteed fix.

When the problem points to hardware
If the gear inputs remain wrong or unstable outside the game after reconnecting the shifter, a hardware fault is possible. Logitech’s G27 troubleshooting material lists a failed potentiometer inside the shifter as one possible cause; the potentiometer tracks the selected gear. The iFixit G27 shifter potentiometer replacement guide documents a repair, but it requires opening the unit and does not establish that the potentiometer is the cause in every case.
If considering a replacement part, look for a G27 shifter potentiometer and verify that the specific part fits your shifter before ordering. A complete replacement shifter assembly is another option after testing indicates a hardware problem; confirm its G27 compatibility and connector. G25/G27 calibration document
Leo Bodnar’s G25/G27 shifter calibration document describes moving through the gears, including reverse. It is an older document, so check that its tool works with your current operating system and software before relying on it.

Do not use RS H-Shifter instructions for a G27
Logitech’s G HUB recalibration instructions apply to the newer RS H-Shifter. They do not establish that the G27 uses the same calibration procedure.
