What is Larian’s new Divinity game?
Larian announced Divinity on December 12, 2025, describing it as a brand-new game set in Rivellon and “Larian’s most ambitious title yet.” The official site identifies it as an RPG. Founder and game director Swen Vincke said, “Despite our long history with the series, this is our first game entitled ‘Divinity.’ We’re ready to bring everything we’ve done previously into one place.” Larian’s announcement and official game site provide the studio’s current framing; the site’s tagline reads, “The gods are silent. Rivellon bleeds. New powers stir.”

The title is simply Divinity. It is distinct from Divinity: Original Sin 2, and Larian has not announced it as a numbered sequel.
Is it a sequel to Divinity: Original Sin 2?
It shares continuity with the earlier games, but Larian describes the new game as a standalone story rather than a direct continuation that depends on prior plot knowledge. In a January 2026 verified AMA, writing director Adam Smith said: “It’s in the same continuity, but it’s a standalone story. Long-term Divinity fans will find lots of familiar things but it’s never just fanservice – it has to serve the story we’re telling.” The verified AMA is the source for that clarification.

Do you need to play earlier Divinity games first?
No. Larian says experience with previous games is not required. Playing Divinity: Original Sin titles may help returning fans recognize connections and familiar elements, but that is an optional bonus, not a prerequisite for understanding the new story.
An optional game while you wait
Divinity: Original Sin 2 is the clearest related choice if you want to explore Rivellon before the new game. Larian describes it as playable on its own. Its support page lists PC and Mac via Steam and GOG, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and iPad; Larian separately announced its availability on Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in December 2025. Check the specific edition and platform compatibility before buying. Larian’s support page lists platforms, and its announcement covers the later platform availability. You do not need to buy it to follow Divinity.

What will the gameplay be like?
A December 2025 report of Vincke’s comments to Bloomberg identifies Divinity as a turn-based RPG. In a separate December interview, Vincke described the game in production as drawing on Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Baldur’s Gate 3, with player agency and cinematic presentation among its design aims. These are descriptions of a game still in development, not a hands-on account or a full feature list. Larian’s announcement does not specify combat systems, multiplayer details, or other mechanics. When does Divinity release, and what platforms are confirmed?
As of October 8, 2026, Larian has announced neither a release date nor a release window in the official announcement and game pages reviewed. The December 2025 interview said the game was in production but supplied no date. There is no confirmed platform list or preorder information in those announcements. Larian’s announcement, official game site, and the December interview coverage do not establish a launch schedule.

In the January 2026 AMA, Larian technical director Bert said the studio would consider Switch 2 and would do its best to release the game on Steam Deck. Those comments express interest and effort, not platform confirmation. Treat any specific launch date, window, or platform list beyond that as unconfirmed unless Larian announces it.

Larian’s announcement positions Divinity as a project that brings the studio’s experience together in its own fantasy setting. The studio said it has more than 500 people worldwide; it also credited Divinity: Original Sin with more than 150 awards and nominations, Divinity: Original Sin 2 with more than 160 awards, and Baldur’s Gate 3 with more than 200 Game of the Year awards. These are figures Larian published in its December 12, 2025 press release, not independently audited totals. Larian’s press release gives the figures.
