His ability to eat enemies and turn them into eggs is a gameplay mechanic, not a sign that he is a villain.
How Nintendo characterizes Yoshi
Nintendo’s official Play Nintendo character page calls Yoshi a problem solver and adventurer in Yoshi’s Crafted World. It also says, “When there is trouble, Yoshi will Flutter Jump to the rescue.” The official Super Mario character page describes him as “Mario’s dependable companion who hails from Yoshi’s Island” and characterizes him as kind and carefree: Nintendo’s Super Mario characters.
Why Yoshi fights enemies
Yoshi can eat enemies and turn them into eggs, which he can use during gameplay. That ability explains how he fights in the games; it does not override his usual role as a companion who helps Mario and goes on adventures. Defeating enemies is part of the action, not proof that Yoshi is morally bad.
Where to see Yoshi as the star
Yoshi’s Crafted World puts him in the leading role. Nintendo describes Yoshi in that game as an adventurer and problem solver. It is a useful place to see his characterization beyond his appearances alongside Mario, though one game is not a definitive moral test.
