How to open Steam chat
In the Steam client, open Friends & Chat from the lower-right corner. Steam also makes Friends & Chat available in a web browser. How to start a voice chat
Voice chat with one friend
- Open Friends & Chat and find the friend you want to call.
- Right-click the friend’s name and choose Start Voice Chat. Alternatively, open the text conversation and select the microphone icon in the lower-right corner of the chat window.
Voice chat in a group
Open the group chat and add a voice channel to start group voice. Steam’s group chats can also include text channels and shareable invitation links. (Valve: New friends list, voice, and chat features)

Check your audio devices
Audio devices are configured in the Voice tab of Friends & Chat settings. Valve says setup may require little configuration when your default audio devices work. If your microphone or speakers are not working, check that tab before troubleshooting elsewhere. (Steam Support: Steam Friends & Chat)

Valve says voice traffic payloads are encrypted and relayed through Steam’s servers, so other participants in the chat do not see your IP address.
