There are eight extra-rare fossils in Donkey Kong Bananza, one in each of the game’s seven 72-fossil layers and one in Planet Core. The five smaller 30-fossil layers have no extra-rare fossil, according to Pocket Tactics’ guide updated December 4, 2025. The available published sources identify each fossil’s layer and shape, but do not establish exact landmarks. For a precise in-game marker, use that layer’s Extra-Rare Fossil Map.
Extra-rare fossil locations by layer
Use the layer name and fossil shape below to identify the collectible you are missing. The counts and roster are reported by Pocket Tactics in its guide updated December 4, 2025; these are guide-reported inventory totals.
| Layer | Fossils in layer | Extra-rare fossil |
|---|---|---|
| Lagoon | 72: 61 common, 10 rare, 1 extra-rare | Whale |
| Hilltop | 30 common | None listed |

| Freezer | 72: 61 common, 10 rare, 1 extra-rare | T-rex |
| Forest | 72: 61 common, 10 rare, 1 extra-rare | Spider |
| Resort | 30 common | None listed |
| Tempest | 72: 61 common, 10 rare, 1 extra-rare | Swordfish |

| Radiance | 72: 61 common, 10 rare, 1 extra-rare | Sea Urchin |
| Groove | 30 common | None listed |
| Feast | 72: 61 common, 10 rare, 1 extra-rare | Robot |
| Forbidden | 30 common | None listed |
| Planet Core | 42: 31 common, 10 rare, 1 extra-rare | 8-bit DK |
The layer and fossil names are corroborated in the relevant guide entries: Pocket Tactics’ fossil guide, plus Game8’s entries for the Lagoon Whale, Canyon Triceratops, and Freezer T-rex. Those sources do not provide accessible, verifiable landmark directions for all eight collectibles, so a particular cave, coordinate, or sub-layer placement cannot be reliably named here.
How to pinpoint the fossil with an Extra-Rare Fossil Map
The most direct supported method is to use an Extra-Rare Fossil Map for the layer you are searching. Its recorded in-game description is: “Reveals the location of a layer’s extra-rare fossil.” The map mechanic is documented by the Super Mario Wiki’s Fossil Map page.

- Use the Extra-Rare Fossil Map for the layer you are in. It reveals the position of that layer’s extra-rare fossil; it does not substitute for a map for a different layer.
- Follow the revealed location and collect the fossil. If the collectible is still missing, check that you are using the map for the correct layer and that the fossil has not already been acquired.
According to the same map reference, maps stop being available in a layer after all fossils there have been mapped or acquired. Pocket Tactics also recommends checking Getaways and upgrading Sonar Clap, which can expose nearby breakable objects that may conceal fossils.

Fossils are exploration collectibles that can be traded for outfits at local Style Shops. Nintendo describes them as items found while exploring and exchanged at local shops on its official Donkey Kong Bananza page. Each layer has its own fossil inventory, and a fossil from one layer cannot be used to buy items in another layer’s shop, according to Pocket Tactics. If you are collecting for a particular shop, search and use the fossil in its own layer.
