Lockpicking is opening a lock without its key, without damaging it. People practice it as a hobby or sport—often called locksport—and locksmiths use it as a professional skill. For beginners, the essential rules are straightforward: practice only on a lock you own or have explicit permission to pick, and check local laws before buying, carrying, or using lockpicks.
What lockpicking means
The Association of Czech Lockpickers describes lockpicking as opening a lock without its key using tools made for that purpose. The aim is non-destructive entry: unlike breaking a lock, successful picking leaves it usable. The term can refer to a locksmithing skill as well as a recreational activity.
Locksport is a hobby and sport
Locksport is the organized, recreational side of lockpicking. The Open Organisation of Lockpickers (TOOOL) describes public competitions that use non-destructive methods, alongside meetings, training, and sporting events. The Association of Czech Lockpickers likewise presents lockpicking as a hobby and sport.
To find a way to learn with other hobbyists, look for a locksport organization or local chapter. TOOOL’s bylaws describe meetings and events, but whether a group is active or holds public sessions depends on your location.

How to start responsibly
- Choose a lock you are allowed to practice on. Use a lock you own, or get the rightful owner’s explicit permission before touching it. A lock installed on a door or used to secure someone’s property is not a practice lock simply because it is accessible.
- Use equipment intended for practice. A practice lock and a basic set of purpose-made tools are suitable categories for learning. Check product descriptions and compatibility information, and do not assume that any beginner set works on every lock.
- Learn in a lawful setting. A locksport group may offer meetings or training; confirm local availability and rules before attending or bringing equipment.
- Check the rules where you live. Laws can address purchase, possession, transport, or use differently. Confirm current requirements for your country, state, or municipality before acquiring or carrying tools.
Permission and ethical limits
Permission is the central boundary: only pick a lock you own or one whose rightful owner has explicitly authorized you to work on. TOOOL’s member bylaws say not to pick or manipulate another person’s lock without that permission. They also advise against sharing lockpicking knowledge or tools with people you know, or have reason to suspect, would use them criminally.
These are useful standards for hobbyists even where the law does not spell out the same rules. Practice on a lock set aside for learning, not on a lock protecting property or access you have not been authorized to test.

Are lockpicks legal to own?
There is no single answer for every location. The Illinois statute 720 ILCS 5/19-2.5, for example, addresses knowing sale or transfer of certain keys and picks specifically manufactured or altered for breaking into property, and includes exceptions. It is an Illinois-specific provision, not a general statement of U.S. or international law. Read the current rules that apply where you live; do not infer that purchase, possession, carrying, or use is treated identically.
