Spoiler-aware: This guide explains the official setup and shared-universe connection, but does not invent a definitive meaning for the base game’s ending. Bandai Namco presents Little Nightmares III as a new story about Low and Alone, best friends trying to escape the Nowhere by crossing the Spiral—a cluster of disturbing places filled with delusions.
What is the story of Little Nightmares III?
Low and Alone are children trapped in the Nowhere, a nightmare world populated by dangerous Residents. They search for a way out by following a mirror path through the Spiral, a cluster of unsettling locations. The publisher names the sandy Necropolis, a Candy Factory, and a filthy funfair called Carnevale among the places on their route.

Bandai Namco frames the journey around survival: the children must hide, run, and sometimes defend themselves from the Residents. The official overview asks whether they will find a way out, but that premise is not a full account of every plot event or an explanation of the world’s rules.
Who are Low and Alone?
Low
Low is an imaginative boy who carries a bow. Producer Coralie Feniello described him as one of the few children who has not lost hope: he believes a mythical place contains a gateway home. In play, his bow can reach high targets and cut ropes.

Alone
Alone is Low’s mechanically minded best friend. She carries a wrench, which she uses to break barriers and operate machinery. The bow and wrench are both character identifiers and practical tools for navigating the environments.
What is the Spiral?
The Spiral is the publisher’s name for a cluster of disturbing places in the Nowhere, described as filled with delusions. The named locations are distinct environments rather than a confirmed map of the world’s complete geography:
- Necropolis: a sandy city where the children encounter Monster Baby.
- Candy Factory: an industrial setting populated by Candy Weevils.
- Carnevale: a filthy funfair.
The publisher also describes Low and Alone following a mirror path across the Spiral. Its official descriptions do not fully explain the metaphysics of the mirror, how the locations connect, or what the Spiral is beyond this cluster of places.
Rank #2
- Embark on a New Adventure in the Unique World of Little Nightmares In Little Nightmares III, you follow the journey of Low & Alone, as they search for a path that could lead them out of Nowhere. Trapped within the Spiral, a cluster of disturbing places, the two friends must work together to survive in a dangerous world full of delusions and escape the grasp of an even more significant threat lurking in the shadows. For the first time in the franchise, face your childhood fears with a friend using online co-op, or solo with an AI companion.
Interpretation, not confirmed lore: The grotesque settings and the publisher’s language of delusions support a reading of the journey as shaped by childhood fears and memory. That is a thematic interpretation, not an established rule that explains every location or event.

How is Little Nightmares III connected to the other games?
Little Nightmares III is a new story in the same universe, with original protagonists and environments. In a September 4, 2023 interview, producer Coralie Feniello called it “a brand-new story set in the universe of Little Nightmares with its original characters and environments.” She said returning players may notice nods to earlier games, while newcomers do not need to have played the first two.
That confirms a shared universe, but the official material cited here does not establish where Low and Alone’s story falls chronologically in relation to Six’s story or the earlier games. Similar imagery or references can suggest connections without proving a precise timeline.

What does the ending mean?
The official overview raises the question of whether Low and Alone escape, but it does not give a definitive explanation of the base-game ending. The producer interview establishes Low’s hope for a gateway home and the game’s place in the shared universe; it does not settle every implication of the ending.
Claims that Alone is imaginary, that the children are in a particular real-world institution, or that the ending proves a specific timeline placement should be treated as theories unless supported by a verifiable in-game passage or an official statement. The available official descriptions do not establish those claims as canon.

The Backstage
Released June 12, 2026, The Backstage begins with Low seeing Alone captured by an unknown Resident. He searches for her with Dime, a new playable partner, exploring the Vault of Curiosities and a new area of Carnevale called the Backstage. Dime’s torch hat helps her navigate threats in the Vault; the Backstage is where the Puppeteer makes puppets for Carnevale. Bandai Namco leaves some details unclear, including who the Vault was intended for.
The Shores
Released September 30, 2026, The Shores has Low and Alone reunite and travel through a mirror to the Shores. They seek a lighthouse beacon across flooded streets, waterways, and submerged passages, facing leeches and the Leech Monster. The chapter is sold separately and is also included in the Deluxe Edition and Secrets of The Spiral Expansion Pass. Check which content your edition or pass already includes before buying it separately.

Best Value
- Brand new UK Import PAL version. Game in English.
- Solo: Play with an AI companion.
- Online co-op: Requires an internet connection. The publisher’s Q&A says Friend’s Pass lets a friend join on supported platforms when only one player owns a copy.
- Save files: The publisher says a co-op save continues with the same two players and cannot switch between solo and co-op; up to eight saves are available.
Cross-play and cross-generation compatibility can depend on platform and updates, so check the current publisher or platform listing before relying on a particular combination of systems.
Which editions include extra content?
Bandai Namco lists Standard, Deluxe, Mirror, and Premium Spiral editions. Edition names and contents do not guarantee current availability at a particular retailer or on every platform. Collector formats may include physical items such as a figurine, artbook, soundtrack, metal case, stickers, themed box, Nome controller or phone holder, and coin; check the current listing for the exact contents of the edition you are considering.
For story content, the important distinction is whether you are buying the base game alone or an edition or pass that includes DLC. The Shores is included in the Deluxe Edition and Secrets of The Spiral Expansion Pass, as well as being sold separately. Confirm what you already own before purchasing an additional copy.
