The apparent point of confusion is the suit’s look: according to that report’s account of the game’s explanation, it comes from a 1957 Batman comic and was worn to distract attention from Robin’s broken arm—not introduced as a Pride reference. That reported comic date is 21 years before the first raising of Gilbert Baker’s rainbow flag in 1978.
Why did the rainbow Batman suit draw criticism?
A report by MDZ says some people criticized the rainbow costume in LEGO Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight as “woke.” The report does not quantify the reaction, so it does not establish that the criticism was widespread. Nor does the available account show that the costume was designed as a Pride reference.
According to MDZ’s description of explanatory text in the game, the costume first appeared in a DC comic in 1957. Batman wore it to divert attention from Robin’s broken arm. The original comic issue has not been independently verified here, so the 1957 debut and the disguise explanation should be understood as details relayed by the report, rather than confirmed against the comic itself. MDZ’s August 26, 2025 report
How can the suit be 21 years older than the Pride flag?
The comparison is between the reported comic debut of the Batman costume in 1957 and the first raising of Gilbert Baker’s rainbow flag on June 25, 1978. Subtracting the years gives a 21-year gap. The two dates come from different kinds of evidence: the costume date is relayed in a 2025 news report, while the flag’s date is recorded by historical institutions.

| Baker’s rainbow flag | June 25, 1978, when an original flag was raised in San Francisco. | Created as a community symbol for San Francisco Gay Freedom Day; historical accounts describe its role in LGBTQ+ visibility and representation. |
The timeline helps explain why a rainbow image does not, by itself, establish a Pride-related intent. The costume’s reported origin predates Baker’s flag, and its stated story function is a disguise. That does not determine how every viewer interprets the design today; it distinguishes the account of its origin from later reactions to its appearance.
What was the original Pride flag like?
Baker and volunteers made two flags for San Francisco’s Gay Freedom Day. The GLBT Historical Society dates their first raising to June 25, 1978; the National Park Service also records that Baker and friends created two flags for the parade that day, and the National Archives says one original flag was raised at United Nations Plaza. The first flag had eight stripes, rather than the six most commonly seen today. The GLBT Historical Society says the hot-pink stripe was removed in 1979 because matching flag fabric was unavailable, and Baker later removed turquoise to leave an even number of stripes for display. The familiar design is therefore a later revision, not the original version.

No. LEGO announced Everyone Is Awesome in 2021 as a separate display model inspired by the rainbow flag. The set includes 11 monochrome minifigures and 346 pieces, according to the LEGO Group’s announcement. That is clear evidence that LEGO has also made a Pride-related rainbow product, but it does not establish that the Batman costume was created with the same intent.
