A location tells you where something is. In geography, that may mean its precise position on Earth or its position in relation to other places. For video games, the same distinction helps describe where a setting or point of interest is—and how it fits into the world around it.

What does “location” mean?

A location is the position of a point or object. The National Geographic Society defines it as where a point or object exists. The word can refer to a real-world position or, in a game discussion, to a point or area within a fictional world.

Location answers “where?” It does not, by itself, explain what a place looks or feels like, what happens there, or why it matters to a player.

Absolute and relative location

There are two useful ways to describe where something is: by specifying its position or by relating it to other places.

Absolute location: a specific position

An absolute location identifies a position precisely, often with latitude and longitude. As an example, National Geographic gives the Empire State Building’s location as 40.7° north latitude and 74° west longitude. That is the example’s stated precision, not a high-precision geodetic coordinate.

Coordinates are useful in mapping and technical contexts, but they may be less helpful to someone who does not use them. A game map may likewise identify a point with coordinates or a grid reference if the game provides one; those systems are specific to the game and should not be assumed to correspond to Earth coordinates.

Relative location: a position in context

A relative location explains where something is in relation to other places. It might identify a location as north of a town, inside a named region, or near a recognizable landmark. For a game, that could mean describing a dungeon as beneath a city or a quest marker as east of a settlement—but only when the game’s map or text supports those details.

Relative descriptions are often easier to understand in ordinary prose, while coordinates can be more precise. Choose the form that helps the reader find the intended point.

Location is not the same as place

In geography, location emphasizes position; place emphasizes the physical and human characteristics that make a spot distinctive. National Geographic notes that everyday speech sometimes uses the words interchangeably, but the distinction is useful when describing a game world, too.

  • Location: where a settlement, dungeon, or landmark is.
  • Place: what that settlement, dungeon, or landmark is like—its terrain, architecture, inhabitants, history, or other defining qualities.

For example, “the village lies in the northern part of the region” gives a relative location. Describing its buildings, residents, and surrounding landscape explains the place. Keep the two ideas separate when a guide needs to help readers both find a destination and understand what they will encounter.

How maps and location data represent places

A map is a representation, not the real-world feature itself. The U.S. Geological Survey explains that maps can help locate places and analyze spatial relationships; different kinds of maps emphasize different information. Road, topographic, and shaded-relief maps can show the same area in different ways. In a game, a world map, minimap, and interior map may likewise emphasize different details, so a marker’s position is meaningful within the map and game system that displays it.

Digital location services also use more than one kind of geographic reference. Amazon Location Service documentation distinguishes locations such as specific points defined by longitude and latitude from “places,” which can include addresses, administrative areas, geographic areas, and points of interest. Those are categories used by that service, not a universal exhaustive classification.

A location type describes what kind of environment is involved rather than where it is. RFC 4589, a 2006 standard, includes physical-environment types such as office and train station. This distinction matters in data systems: coordinates can identify a position, while a separate category can label the environment.

Finding or describing a location clearly

  1. Decide what the reader needs. Use a precise position when exact placement matters; use a relative description when context is more useful.
  2. Name the map or reference system. Coordinates, grid references, map pins, and named regions are not interchangeable. Identify the game map or system if that could affect how someone follows the directions.
  3. Give a recognizable anchor for relative directions. State the nearby landmark, region, or other reference point, and include direction or distance only when verified.
  4. Add characteristics separately. If the reader also needs to know what the destination is like, describe its features as information about the place rather than treating them as part of its position.

For U.S. geographic names, the General Services Administration says federal agencies use geographic location codes and points to the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS) as the official repository of domestic geographic names data used by federal departments. That is a U.S. government reference function, not a universal authority for names everywhere.
