A forum post from August 20, 2003, and a later retrospective review describe extensive racist changes to the game’s graphics and other presentation. The available accounts do not establish who made it or when it was first created.
Is Super KKK Bros. 2 real?
Historical reports describe a modified version of the NES game Super Mario Bros. 2 under the name Super KKK Bros. 2. An AnandTech Forums participant discussed a copy on August 20, 2003, and I-Mockery later reviewed a hack by that name. These sources support the existence of a hack described under this title; they are not official Nintendo records or a technical examination of a preserved ROM.

It should not be confused with the official Super Mario Bros. 2. The accounts characterize it as a user-made modification, and none indicates that Nintendo released it.
What did the hack change?
Changes described in the 2003 forum post
The AnandTech participant reported that Mario and Luigi wore robes and pointed hats, enemies wore black masks, and familiar items—including the POW block, star, heart, and vegetables—were replaced with racist imagery. The post is one player’s account of the copy they encountered.
#1 Best Overall
The participant later said they had played only through level 2, adding: “Gameplay is the same, it just seems like everything has a different skin on it.” That observation applies to the portion they played; it does not verify that every level or gameplay element was unchanged.
What the retrospective review describes
I-Mockery’s review describes a wider set of altered graphics and crude additions, including Klan-associated clothing and symbols, changed power-ups and enemies, different boss characters, and modified sound or text cues. Its account is broader than the forum participant’s limited play report, but it remains a retrospective review rather than a technical audit.

Who made it, and when?
I-Mockery attributes the displayed author handles “DEE” and “AC2K” to the hack. The available sources do not independently verify those handles, establish the people behind them, or confirm a connection to real-world identities. They also do not establish an exact creation date, original release or distribution channel, or canonical version.
The forum post establishes that the hack was being discussed by August 20, 2003. A catalog entry later lists a file named “Super KKK Bros 2 (SMB2 Hack).nes,” but a filename in a catalog does not prove that the file is authentic, complete, safe, lawfully distributed, or the same version discussed in 2003. The sources therefore do not establish the provenance of currently cataloged files.

How to interpret the historical accounts
- The forum post: A participant’s dated account, with a stated play limit of level 2.
- The retrospective review: A later description of additional visual, audio, and text changes; it is not an independent technical verification.
- The catalog listing: Evidence that a filename using the hack’s name appears in a catalog, not proof of the file’s identity or distribution status.
The sources support describing Super KKK Bros. 2 as a racist NES ROM hack discussed by 2003. They do not settle its full development history, authenticate a particular downloadable file, or establish any official relationship with Nintendo.
