Studio founder Robert Bowling said a designer pressed it while leaving; once inside, officers saw a life-sized display of Call of Duty character Simon “Ghost” Riley and checked the building. The available account does not establish that the statue was mistaken for a real person or that swatting caused the response.
Why did LAPD go to Robotoki?
According to a June 1, 2013 report by MajorGeeks, officers responded to a panic alarm at Robotoki, a game studio on Ventura Boulevard in Sherman Oaks. Founder Robert Bowling said the alarm had been installed the previous day and that a designer pressed it while leaving.
Bowling described the alarm as intended for an armed threat. The MajorGeeks article quoted him saying: “Our studio is equipped with a ‘panic’ alarm in case of an armed threat, which was installed yesterday.”
What did officers see inside?
Bowling said officers detained him while they checked the studio. He also recounted that, as officers reached the top of the stairs, they had a direct view of a life-sized Ghost display standing by a window. In the account he gave MajorGeeks, officers paused briefly, then searched and cleared the rest of the building.

- Officially licensed Call of Duty Ghost figure: Heavy-duty PVC construction with sturdy black base holds gaming controllers, mobile phones, remotes, and more without tipping over during intense gaming sessions
The report describes the display as a Call of Duty character statue. It does not establish that officers believed it was a real person or that they mistook it for a gunman; Bowling’s description is that they saw it and then proceeded to check the building.
Was the incident swatting?
Swatting—making a false emergency report to provoke a police response—was raised in earlier coverage as a possible explanation. But the accessible 2013 account reports Bowling’s explanation that a designer triggered the panic alarm. It does not confirm swatting as the cause.

That distinction matters: a response to an activated alarm is not, on its own, evidence that someone made a false report. The available account is secondary reporting that relays the studio founder’s version, not an LAPD incident record. MajorGeeks linked to an original Polygon report, but that report could not be independently checked for this account.
