Yes—but “secret room” can mean two different spaces in a Minecraft desert pyramid, often called a desert temple. The central treasure chamber sits beneath the middle of the floor and holds four chests; a separate room near the back is buried in sand and is connected with archaeology.
Which secret room do you mean?
There are two distinct rooms, not two names for the same space:
| Room | Where to find it | What it contains or does | Hazard |
|---|---|---|---|
| Central treasure chamber | Beneath the center of the floor | Four chests | A pressure plate is connected to TNT |
| Sand-buried back room | Near the back of the structure, beneath sand | Suspicious sand associated with archaeology | No matching trap is established by the cited sources |
Minecraft Help describes the four-chest chamber beneath the floor’s center in its guide to Rare Structures in Minecraft. Minecraft’s official Desert Pyramid article describes the other location: “Near the back, if you dig a bit, you can uncover a secret room buried in sand.”
How to reach the central treasure chamber safely
The central chamber is the room most players mean when looking for hidden treasure. Its floor trap makes it important to enter carefully: the pressure plate is connected to TNT, and triggering it can destroy the chests and their loot.
#1 Best Overall
- Find the center of the pyramid’s floor and uncover the way down to the chamber.
- As you descend, avoid stepping on the pressure plate in the middle of the chamber.
- Loot the four chests without activating the plate.
The Minecraft Wiki’s temple tutorial specifies nine TNT blocks beneath the chamber’s sandstone floor. The official Minecraft article also warns that something stepping on the plate can set off the TNT and destroy the loot. Avoid the plate while entering and looting.
How to find the sand-buried room
For the separate back room, search near the rear of the structure and dig through the sand. This is not the central pit with four chests. It matters for archaeology because desert temples contain suspicious sand; the Minecraft Wiki’s archaeology reference lists possible finds from archaeology.

The cited references do not establish a specific item chance or guarantee for every edition and game version, so treat the room as an archaeology location rather than a promise of a particular find. The TNT warning applies to the central treasure chamber; the cited sources do not establish the same trap in the back room.

“Desert temple” is familiar player wording. Minecraft’s official article calls the structure a desert pyramid and explains that it was originally called a desert temple; the name changed because the author found no evidence of worship or rituals. Both names refer to the structure discussed here.
