A replay buffer temporarily keeps recent gameplay so you can press a hotkey to save it as a clip. If no buffer or recording was active when the moment happened, recording software cannot recover it afterward.
How recording past gameplay works
A replay buffer continuously captures a rolling window of recent gameplay. When you save a replay, the software writes that buffered segment to a video file. The buffer length determines how far back the clip reaches, so you need to enable it before playing and save the clip before the moment falls outside the window.
If you did not have a buffer running, check whether the game itself saved a replay or whether another capture source was active. Otherwise, the missed gameplay is not available in the PC’s local capture history.
Which PC replay option should you use?
| Option | Best fit | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| NVIDIA App Instant Replay | A supported GeForce PC where you want a quick overlay hotkey. | NVIDIA describes a rolling recording with a configurable length. The app settings include hotkeys, audio sources, quality, disk-space limits and save location. Confirm the feature is available for your installed GPU and software. |
| AMD Radeon ReLive Instant Replay | A supported Radeon setup using Radeon recording controls. | AMD’s documentation describes a duration of up to 20 minutes per session, adjustable in 30-second increments. The footage is saved to the selected folder; check the controls in your installed Radeon Software because menu names and support can vary by release. |
| OBS Studio Replay Buffer | Players who want to select a game, window or display source, or compose a scene. | OBS offers more capture-source and scene control, but requires more setup. Choose an available encoder and test at the resolution and frame rate you intend to use. |
| Xbox Game Bar | Straightforward recording that starts when you press the record command. | Microsoft’s documented workflow starts recording on command; it does not establish that Game Bar can save footage from before that command. |

NVIDIA App Instant Replay
Open the NVIDIA overlay and enable Instant Replay, then use its current settings to choose the buffer length, save folder, audio sources, recording quality and disk-space limit. Assign or confirm the save hotkey and make a short test clip. NVIDIA’s November 12, 2024 release article gives Alt+Shift+F10 as an example shortcut, but use the shortcut shown in your installed overlay in case it has changed.

NVIDIA says the app can capture up to 4K at 120 FPS or 8K at 60 FPS using AV1 in the hardware and app context it describes. NVIDIA also claims AV1 improves encoding efficiency by 40% on GeForce RTX 40 Series GPUs and laptop GPUs with eighth-generation NVIDIA encoders. These are vendor-stated capabilities for that specified hardware and codec context, not guarantees for every GeForce system or a cross-vendor comparison. NVIDIA’s NVIDIA App release article
AMD Radeon ReLive Instant Replay
In Radeon recording settings, enable Instant Replay, select a duration and recording profile, and set the Save Instant Replay hotkey. AMD’s documented duration control reaches 20 minutes per session in 30-second increments, and clips go to the selected Save Folder. Check the free space on that drive: AMD warns that gameplay recordings can be very large, with file size depending on the recording profile. The exact controls can differ across Radeon Software releases. AMD’s Radeon ReLive capture and streaming instructions

OBS Studio Replay Buffer
- In OBS, add the source you want to record: Game Capture for a game, Window Capture for a specific window, or Display Capture for the full display. Choose the source that matches what you want in the clip.
- Open Settings > Output, configure recording options and enable Replay Buffer. Set the buffer duration and select a hardware encoder if one is available and appropriate for your system.
- Open Settings > Hotkeys and assign a key to save the replay buffer. Check the recording path and audio sources, then save a short test clip and verify its picture and sound.
OBS documents --startreplaybuffer as a launch parameter, which can start the buffer automatically when OBS launches. Confirm that the buffer is active and test the save hotkey anyway. OBS notes that 60-fps output can be more demanding than 30 fps, so test using your intended resolution and frame rate rather than assuming a particular performance impact. Xbox Game Bar
On Windows 10 and Windows 11, Microsoft documents Windows+Alt+R to start or stop a recording. That captures from the point you invoke the command; Microsoft’s cited instructions do not describe a rolling buffer for saving the preceding minutes. Use Game Bar when you want to begin recording on demand, and check its audio settings if the clip needs game sound or a microphone. Feature availability may vary by region. Check these settings before your next session
- Choose one capture system. Confirm that it recognizes the game and that its buffer is enabled before you start playing.
- Set a useful duration. Choose a window long enough to cover the time between the event and when you can press the save hotkey.
- Test the save hotkey. Verify that it works in-game and note where the clip is stored.
- Choose audio deliberately. Check whether game audio and microphone audio are included; do not assume the microphone is on.
- Check storage and quality. Choose a destination with enough free space, especially for longer or higher-quality clips.
- Test your intended settings. Make a short clip at the resolution and frame rate you plan to use, then check the image and sound.
If the buffer will not start or save
First check that the replay buffer is enabled, the save hotkey is assigned, and the destination drive has space. If you use OBS and capture or encoding fails, check whether another background capture tool is competing for the same resources. OBS’s August 26, 2021 troubleshooting guidance discusses conflicts involving Windows 10 Game DVR/background capture, including some NVIDIA encoding configurations. Treat it as a Windows 10-specific troubleshooting check, not a blanket instruction to disable capture features on current Windows versions. OBS Windows Gaming Features Troubleshooting
