Yes—in principle, 20 diamond ore blocks can form one connected cluster in a Minecraft world. But a connected patch is not proof that a single world-generation attempt placed every block, and the exact maximum for one diamond feature in current versions is not established here.
What does “a 20 vein” mean?
Players often use “vein” informally for diamond ore blocks that touch or appear as one patch. That visible connection is something you can observe; it does not reveal whether one generation event placed the whole cluster. Two or more nearby generation attempts can create a connected-looking patch.
So if you uncover 20 connected diamond ore blocks, it is reasonable to call what you found a 20-block cluster. It is not enough to conclude that Minecraft generated them as one 20-block vein.
Does Minecraft’s version affect diamond generation?
Yes. Minecraft’s official Java Edition 1.18 update notes, published November 30, 2021, documented a change to ore distribution: “Diamond Ore generates below height 16, with more Diamond Ore the lower you go.” The notes also state: “Diamond Ore have reduced air exposure, so you will find more Diamond Ore buried or underwater than exposed to air.” Minecraft: Caves & Cliffs: Part II out today on Java

Those statements describe Java Edition 1.18; they are not a complete specification for every later version or for Bedrock Edition. The same update notes describe rare, large, snake-like ore veins for copper and iron—not diamond. They therefore do not establish that a 20-block diamond cluster is one of those large veins.
Is 20 the maximum, or how rare is it?
The available evidence does not establish a definitive maximum size for a single modern diamond generation feature, across current editions. Nor does it provide a reliable probability for finding a connected 20-block cluster. Treat claims about an exact maximum, odds, or a record cautiously unless they identify the edition, game version, and whether they count connected blocks or one generation attempt.
