Official Charizard VMAX cards include Darkness Ablaze 020 and Shining Fates SV107. Pokémon does have an official commemorative metal Charizard, but it depicts the original Base Set Charizard—not a VMAX card.
Which Charizard VMAX cards are documented officially?
Pokémon’s official set checklists provide a more reliable identification than a seller’s description or a gold finish. The Darkness Ablaze checklist lists Charizard VMAX as card 020. The Shining Fates checklist lists Charizard VMAX as SV107.
These are useful comparison points, not proof that every card with similar artwork is genuine. Check that a claimed card’s name, set and number match an official listing; appearance alone does not establish its identity.
What is the official metal Charizard?
The Pokémon TCG Celebrations Ultra-Premium Collection, launched in Q4 2021, included commemorative solid-metal cards featuring the original Base Set Pikachu and Charizard. Pokémon’s product page describes those metal cards separately from the collection’s special gold Pikachu V and gold Poké Ball. It does not identify a gold Charizard VMAX.

| Item | Identity | Material or finish | Role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Darkness Ablaze Charizard VMAX 020 | Charizard VMAX; listed in the official Darkness Ablaze checklist | Not described as a metal card in the checklist | Pokémon TCG card |
| Shining Fates Charizard VMAX SV107 | Charizard VMAX; listed in the official Shining Fates checklist | Not described as a metal card in the checklist | Pokémon TCG card |
| Celebrations Ultra-Premium Collection metal Charizard | Commemorative Base Set Charizard, not a VMAX | Solid metal, per Pokémon’s product page | Commemorative collectible |
| Celebrations Ultra-Premium Collection gold Pikachu V and gold Poké Ball | Separate items listed in the collection | Gold finish, per Pokémon’s product page | Special gold collectibles |
Because the collection combines a metal Charizard with other gold-colored items, listings can blur “gold,” “metal” and “Charizard.” Those descriptions do not turn the commemorative Base Set card into an official gold Charizard VMAX.
How to check a card or listing
- Ask for the exact identity. Get the claimed card name, set, card number and language. Compare them with Pokémon’s Darkness Ablaze and Shining Fates checklists where relevant. A description that relies only on words such as “rare,” “gold,” “metal” or “limited” does not establish a set identity.
- Request clear front and back photographs. Compare the card with an official reference. Pokémon Support says counterfeit cards can often be seen through when held up to a bright light, making that a useful clue—not a complete authentication test. See Pokémon’s counterfeit-card guidance.
- Consider the seller and terms. A dramatic finish or a low price does not prove rarity or authenticity. Pokémon Support’s specific price warning concerns booster packs priced dramatically below suggested retail; it should not be treated as a valuation rule for a single card.
- Ask a specialist to examine a specific card. Pokémon Support suggests seeking a shop that specializes in trading cards to evaluate a potentially counterfeit card. Photos and seller wording alone may not settle a specific item’s authenticity.
What can—and can’t—be concluded about an individual card
Without the item’s claimed set, card number, language, condition, front and back images, and seller details, it is not possible to authenticate a specific card or determine its value. If a seller calls an item a “gold Charizard VMAX,” ask for those details before treating the label as an official card identity.

In a notice dated September 19, 2023, The Pokémon Company identified products using Pokémon TCG copyrighted works or trademarks without authorization that were traded under names including “replica” and “metal card.” That notice is a reason to scrutinize such labels, but it does not by itself identify a particular card as counterfeit.
