Neither Steam nor Epic Games Store is universally better for GTA V. Both PC versions rely on Rockstar account services, and Rockstar says PC progress is shared across storefronts when the copies are linked to the same Rockstar Games account. Choose based on the current price for the same edition, the library you prefer, your PC’s ability to run Enhanced, and whether you already own the game.
What actually differs between Steam and Epic?
The store you buy from determines where your PC entitlement is held and which store’s library you use. It does not remove Rockstar account requirements: Steam’s listing says activation, online play, and periodic entitlement verification require an internet connection and Rockstar account login. The Steam listing also specifies Rockstar software requirements. See Steam’s GTA V Enhanced listing.

The official information available does not establish a lasting price advantage, a performance advantage, or a decisive feature advantage for either storefront. Prices and discounts change, so compare the current regional checkout prices for equivalent editions rather than relying on an old sale or assuming one store is always cheaper.
Which store should you choose?
Choose Steam if its library suits you
Steam is a practical choice if you already use it for your PC games or prefer keeping your library there, provided the equivalent edition’s current price works for you. The available evidence does not support claiming that the Steam version performs better or is permanently discounted.
#1 Best Overall
- STUNNING VISUALS — Enhanced levels of fidelity and performance with new graphics modes featuring up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, HDR options, ray tracing, improved texture quality, and more
- FASTER LOADING — Quicker access to the action as the world of Los Santos and Blaine County load in faster than ever before.
- ADAPTIVE TRIGGERS AND HAPTIC FEEDBACK — Feel every moment through the DualSense controller, from directional damage to weather effects, rough road surfaces to explosions, and more.
- TEMPEST 3D AUDIO — Hear the sounds of the world with pinpoint precision: the throttle of a stolen supercar, the rattle of neighbouring gunfire, the roar of a helicopter overhead, and more.
- Please note that although this game is Region Free or Region Unlocked and will work on all systems, this is the European version and may differ from the local version in age rating, labeling or instructions.
Choose Epic Games Store if you prefer that library
Epic is a sensible choice if you use its library or already own the Epic PC entitlement. Epic says purchasers of Enhanced also receive Legacy. Check the edition shown in your Epic account and listing before buying. Epic’s GTA V Enhanced support page explains the included editions.
If you already own GTA V on PC
Do not buy it again solely on the assumption that progress will not carry over. Rockstar says PC copies on Rockstar Games Launcher, Steam, and Epic share progress and characters when linked to the same Rockstar Games account. Story Mode saves are associated with that Rockstar account; GTA Online saves are also linked to it and handled by the game. This is about progress, not ownership: it does not transfer your purchase entitlement from one storefront to another. Check that the relevant accounts are linked and that the game entitlement appears in the store where you plan to play. Rockstar’s account and progress guidance was last updated October 4, 2024.

Enhanced or Legacy: check the PC edition before buying
GTA V Enhanced and GTA V Legacy are distinct PC editions. Steam describes Enhanced as offering updated graphics, supported ray tracing features, loading improvements, 3D audio, and GTA Online features. Epic says an Enhanced purchase includes Legacy. Rockstar’s PC store likewise lists both editions and says Legacy is included for PCs that do not meet Enhanced’s minimum requirements. Review the exact listing and the official system requirements before purchasing; inclusion of Legacy is not a guarantee that either edition will run well on a particular computer. Rockstar’s PC purchase page lists the editions.

Moving a profile from Legacy to Enhanced on PC is a separate, one-time migration process—not the same thing as buying on Steam instead of Epic. Rockstar lists eligibility limitations, and migration between PC and console, in either direction, is not supported. Read the current requirements before starting the process: Rockstar’s PC profile migration guidance was last updated February 27, 2025.

A quick decision checklist
- Compare the regional checkout prices for the same edition on Steam and Epic.
- Check whether you already own a PC copy and which Rockstar Games account it is linked to before paying for another entitlement.
- Confirm whether the listing is Enhanced, Legacy, or includes both, then compare your PC with the official system requirements.
- Pick the storefront whose library you prefer, knowing that Rockstar account services are involved either way.
- If you are moving from Legacy to Enhanced, check Rockstar’s migration eligibility rules separately; do not expect PC-to-console progress transfer.
