To install FiveM for GTA V roleplay, first install and update a legitimate PC copy of GTA V, then download the client from FiveM.net and run FiveM.exe. Point it to the folder containing GTA5.exe, let it update local game data, authorize with a Cfx account, and launch the installed client from the Windows Start menu to find a server.
You do not need to create a FiveM server to join roleplay. Server creation with txAdmin is a separate task.
Before you install FiveM
- You need a legitimate, fully updated PC copy of GTA V. Cfx.re says FiveM does not work with illegitimate copies. Its documentation lists Steam, Epic Games Store, Rockstar Warehouse, Amazon, and Xbox Store as common places to buy GTA V; check the current listing and edition before purchasing.
- You need a Windows PC. Cfx.re documents Windows 10 version 1703 (Creators Update) as the minimum supported version. Its reviewed client-installation pages do not provide a complete current CPU, GPU, or RAM specification.
- You need the FiveM client installer from FiveM.net and a Cfx account for the documented authorization flow.
Install FiveM: step-by-step
- Install GTA V on your PC and let its launcher finish any available game updates.
- Visit FiveM.net, choose Download Client, and review the Creator Platform License Agreement. Continue only if you agree.
- Open your Downloads folder and run FiveM.exe.
- When prompted, browse to your GTA V installation folder and select GTA5.exe. Confirm the path.
- If FiveM says local game data needs updating, choose Yes and let it prepare the data. Cfx.re notes this can take several minutes.
- Review and accept the Terms of Service if you agree. Choose Sign in with Cfx, authorize in the browser, return to FiveM, and select Continue.
- After installation, launch FiveM from the Windows Start menu. By default, its client files install to %localappdata%\FiveM. If you run the installer from an empty folder, the client installs there instead.
- Use the client to find and connect to a roleplay server. Follow that server’s own connection instructions and rules.

Fixing common first-launch problems
- FiveM cannot find GTA V: Confirm the game is installed, then browse to its installation folder and select GTA5.exe.
- Game storage is outdated: Check that GTA V is fully updated through its game launcher, then try FiveM again.
- “FiveM is already installed” appears: Open the installed client from the Windows Start menu rather than running the downloaded installer again.
- A crash occurs on only one server: Try the FiveM.net testing server. If it works, contact the affected roleplay server’s owners, as the problem may be specific to that server.
- An error persists: Check the relevant instructions in Cfx.re’s Client Issues documentation. Its support guidance covers issues including entitlement-token errors, component loading, outdated Windows, and cache. Avoid deleting game files or disabling security protections based on guesswork.
FAQ
Do I need to create a FiveM server to play roleplay?
No. Install the client to connect to a roleplay server. Creating and managing your own server with txAdmin is a separate task.
Which GTA V file should I select during setup?
Select GTA5.exe in your GTA V installation folder when FiveM prompts you to locate the game.

Where does FiveM install?
The client manual gives %localappdata%\FiveM as the default location. If you run the installer from an empty folder, it installs the client in that folder instead.
What should I do if FiveM crashes on one roleplay server?
Try the FiveM.net testing server. If that works, contact the affected server’s owners because the issue may be server-specific.
