These effects predate Minecraft 1.19, The Wild Update; the version is context, not when the Easter eggs were introduced.
How to use a name tag Easter egg
Rename a name tag with the exact spelling shown below, then apply it to the matching mob. The effect depends on both the name and the target: jeb_ belongs on a sheep, Toast on a rabbit, and Johnny on a vindicator. Dinnerbone and Grumm work on mobs, with exceptions.
Name tag Easter eggs at a glance
| Name | Target | Effect | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dinnerbone | Mobs, with exceptions | Renders upside down | Not every entity is affected. |
| Grumm | Mobs, with exceptions | Renders upside down | Not every entity is affected. |
| jeb_ | Sheep | Appearance cycles through colors | Shearing does not yield wool in the cycling color. |
| Toast | Rabbit | Applies a special memorial skin | The researched material does not establish a more detailed origin story. |
| Johnny | Vindicator | Causes broad attacks on nearby mobs | There are exclusions; this can make the vindicator disruptive. |
Dinnerbone and Grumm: upside-down mobs
Name a mob Dinnerbone or Grumm to make it render upside down. The effect has exceptions, so do not assume it applies to every entity. These names change the mob’s appearance, unlike Johnny, which changes hostile behavior.
jeb_: rainbow sheep
Name a sheep jeb_, including the underscore, to make its appearance cycle through colors. The visual effect does not change the wool color obtained by shearing the sheep.

Version note: Minecraft 1.19
Minecraft 1.19, officially titled The Wild Update, released on June 7, 2022. The four naming effects above already existed before that release. Research also records name tags appearing in ancient-city chest generation in 1.19 experimental snapshot history; that acquisition detail is separate from the name-triggered Easter eggs and should not be treated as a guarantee for every 1.19 world-generation configuration.
