Katanaut is a single-player PC action roguelite that mixes fast melee combat, customizable runs and sci-fi cosmic horror. Critics lean positive on its combat, style and build options, but their reviews also point to a meaningful trade-off: the demanding fights and slower permanent progression will suit some players far better than others.
What is Katanaut?
Developed by Voidmaw and published by Acclaim, Inc., Katanaut launched for PC on September 10, 2025. Steam describes it as a fast-paced, Metroidvania-inspired action roguelite set aboard a space station, where players fight the station’s twisted former inhabitants amid cosmic horror. That combination makes it easier to place the game than to pin it to just one genre. Its repeated runs and run-specific upgrades point to roguelite structure; its side-scrolling action and exploration draw on Metroidvanias. The available reviews describe a familiar mix of genre ingredients rather than establishing that Katanaut reinvents either one.
What do critics think of Katanaut?
The critical reception is favorable overall, but mixed opinions are substantial enough that an aggregate score does not tell the whole story. Metacritic’s PC page displayed a score of 75 from 12 critic reviews: seven positive, five mixed and zero negative. This is a snapshot, and the page may change.

The recurring strengths are melee combat, pace, customization and presentation. The recurring reservations include difficulty, slow permanent upgrades, readability in hectic moments, backtracking, uneven procedural layouts, familiar genre ideas and questions about replay value. Those are not unanimous complaints: reviewers differ both on how the challenge feels and on whether the level variation is enough.
Why reviewers praise the combat and customization
Combat feel is one of the clearest points in Katanaut’s favor. GameGrin reviewer Gary “Dombalurina” Sheppard awarded the Windows version 10/10, praising its “light-speed combat” and “oodles of customisation.” His review describes variety across weapons, damage types, skills, perks and run-specific upgrades, with stamina also shaping how fights play out. GameGrin’s review treats those systems as part of what makes repeated runs appealing.
Tech-Gaming’s Robert Allen likewise characterized combat as “relentless and rarely unfair,” and said the presentation helped motivate replay. His September 11, 2025 review disclosed that the outlet received publisher-provided review code. Tech-Gaming’s review is a useful counterpoint to the harsher accounts of the game’s difficulty: the challenge can feel demanding without feeling arbitrary to every reviewer.
For players who enjoy adapting a build as a run develops, that mix of weapon and upgrade choices is a stronger selling point than the promise of a wholly new genre formula. The reviews support an appeal based on execution, variety and atmosphere—not a claim that every run or system will feel unprecedented.
How difficult is Katanaut?
Difficulty is a genuine fit question, not a minor caveat. GameGrin called the game “unapologetically tricky”; Sheppard reported playing for more than 20 hours before defeating the first boss. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a completion-time estimate or a forecast for every player.
GamesSpew, by contrast, criticized the tough experience and slow pace of permanent upgrades. GamesSpew’s review helps explain why a player can enjoy improving within a run yet still feel that long-term advancement comes too slowly. Together, the reviews suggest two related but separate questions: whether you enjoy demanding combat, and whether you are comfortable with the rate at which failed or completed runs contribute to lasting progress.

If you like learning enemy patterns, managing stamina and refining a build through repeated attempts, the challenge may be part of the draw. If a run that ends in a tough fight feels like too little progress, the slow-upgrade criticism deserves particular weight.
Where the reviews disagree: exploration, readability and replay
Not every reservation is about combat. Metacritic’s summaries report concerns from reviewers about readability during action and backtracking, as well as some unevenness in procedural layouts. GameGrin found the challenge compelling and the level variation sufficient, so those criticisms should be read as differences in response rather than a universal verdict on the level design.

Other summaries on Metacritic raise questions about originality and replay value. Softpedia praised gameplay and run customization while describing the game as not long; Worth Playing questioned originality and replay value. These are distinct judgments: a game can offer enjoyable build variation without convincing every critic that its overall structure stays fresh or supports extensive replay.

The takeaway is not that Katanaut lacks replay value, but that its appeal seems tied to whether its particular blend of fast action, customization and horror atmosphere keeps you engaged. Readers seeking a radically novel premise or expansive exploration should treat the mixed comments as a reason to temper expectations.

Based on the cited reviews, Katanaut looks like a good fit for players who want fast, demanding side-scrolling action, repeated runs with room to customize, and a stylized sci-fi horror setting. Its strongest consensus points—combat, presentation and build options—align closely with those tastes.
It is a more uncertain recommendation if you dislike punishing difficulty, expect permanent upgrades to arrive quickly, or have little patience for backtracking and familiar genre conventions. The critical aggregate is positive, but the five mixed reviews among Metacritic’s 12-review snapshot reflect real differences in what critics value.

How current is the game’s update information?
Steam’s listing describes an “Into the Void” update dated August 7, 2026. Its notes say it adds Warp 4, a new area and ending, more than 270 katana skill nodes, five elite enemies, enemy reworks, achievements, quality-of-life changes and balance changes. Those details describe that update as listed on Steam; later patches may alter the game. Check Steam’s listing for the current version information.
Steam also displayed 88% positive from 475 user reviews and 87% positive among 108 recent reviews in the snapshot used for this article. These storefront figures are volatile, are not critic scores and should be checked on the live page before relying on them.
