Mundaun is a first-person horror adventure whose hand-penciled art and Swiss Alpine folklore are the main event. Its exploration, puzzles, fear mechanic, and limited-resource encounters give that atmosphere something to support, though the experience is best judged as a distinctive mood-driven adventure rather than a combat-heavy horror game. GameSpot’s PC review scored it 8/10; Steam and the US PlayStation Store also show positive player-rating snapshots, each from a different audience and scale.
What is Mundaun?
Published by Annapurna Interactive, Mundaun is set in a secluded Alpine valley. You explore meadows and snowy peaks, collect items, solve handcrafted puzzles, drive, and encounter hostile creatures and eccentric inhabitants who speak an obscure language. Fear is part of the mechanics: as Curdin becomes more afraid, he moves more slowly. The publisher gives the release date as March 16, 2021. Steam categorizes the PC release as an action, adventure, and indie game, and lists tags including first-person, exploration, single-player, atmospheric, and psychological horror. Those are storefront tags, not a formal genre definition. Steam’s listing also provides the PC language options and system requirements.
What makes Mundaun distinctive?
Hand-penciled art shapes the whole experience
The striking visual style is more than a surface treatment. Creator Michel Ziegler said that “Every character, scene and even environmental textures in the game are hand-pencilled.” Ziegler, identified as founder and developer of Hidden Fields, described the project’s development in a PlayStation Blog interview. Academic reviewer Kathrin Trattner describes the drawings as scanned and mapped onto 3D models, giving the landscape an unusual combination of illustrated texture and navigable space. That account also characterizes the game as Swiss folk horror. Trattner’s analysis connects the visual approach, setting, and regional language.

Folklore is tied to place
The Alpine valley is central to the mystery, not a generic backdrop. Trattner notes the dialogue is Romansh, a regional language, and reads the game’s setting through its Swiss context. This gives the story a specific cultural texture, though the game’s spoken language may be unfamiliar to players. Consult the storefront language listings for interface and subtitle options rather than assuming that the dialogue is English.
What is the story and how does it play?
In the spoiler-light premise summarized by Trattner, Curdin returns to Mundaun after learning his grandfather Flurin died in a barn fire. He finds the grave empty and begins investigating a curse connected to his grandfather. The mystery unfolds through exploration and discovery; the details of the curse and later revelations are best left unspoiled.
Exploration and puzzles
Progress involves searching the valley, gathering objects, and working through environmental puzzles. The landscape and its inhabitants create space between the more threatening encounters, while discoveries gradually build the story. Puzzle clarity and pacing can shape how enjoyable that rhythm feels, but neither should be treated as a universal flaw or strength without considering the player and platform experience.
Fear and hostile encounters
When Curdin’s fear rises, his movement slows, turning fear into a practical vulnerability rather than only a visual effect. Hostile encounters also involve limited resources. Trattner notes that avoiding confrontation or planning attacks are both viable approaches. The result is a game in which managing danger and deciding when to engage matter more than expecting uninterrupted action.

What do reviewers and players think?
GameSpot’s PC review, published March 18, 2021, scored Mundaun 8/10 and called it “a great horror adventure game in a gorgeous hand-drawn world.” That assessment speaks directly to the game’s strongest defining feature, while applying specifically to the PC version reviewed.

Who is Mundaun for?
Mundaun is a strong fit if you value an original art direction, a setting grounded in regional folklore, and exploration punctuated by tense encounters. Its fear mechanic and resource-conscious threats add pressure without making combat the whole point. Players seeking fast, combat-focused horror may find its emphasis on atmosphere and investigation less appealing.
