The protagonist’s name is chosen by the player. ATLUS director Katsura Hashino confirmed that the game’s system has a default name, but said the team deliberately did not foreground it so players could name the character and put themselves into the game. “Will” is commonly reported as the English default, but Hashino did not identify that name in the interview—so it is more accurate to call it the commonly reported default than an undisputed canon name.
Is there a canon name for Metaphor: ReFantazio’s protagonist?
Not in the sense of a single name ATLUS presents as the character’s definitive identity. The game lets players name its protagonist, and Hashino explained that this was intentional. In an official Xbox Podcast interview, he said the developers wanted players to come up with their own names and put themselves in the game, adding that they did not bring the default name “out to the front.”

Hashino also confirmed that the development system uses a default name, but he did not say what it is. The distinction matters: the interview verifies that a default exists, not that any particular name is the official canon name.
Why is the protagonist often called Will?
“Will” is commonly reported as the protagonist’s English default name. Game8 identifies the character by that name in its protagonist guide. That makes Will a useful answer when someone asks for the name players commonly associate with the character, but it does not override the qualification in Hashino’s interview: the director confirmed a default without naming it.

ATLUS’s official game page describes him as an Elda boy who travels with Gallica to lift the curse on the prince, but does not give him a name. The player-customized name, rather than a prominently established fixed name, is central to how the game presents the protagonist.

SEGA Support says that changing the game language during play resets the protagonist’s custom name to a default. Its FAQ, updated October 7, 2024, does not identify which name is restored. So this behavior confirms that the game has a fallback name, but it is not official confirmation from SEGA that the fallback is “Will.”

So what name should you use?
- If you want the commonly reported English default: use Will, with the qualification that it is commonly reported rather than established as a universal canon name by the cited official interview.
- If you want the name the game treats as yours: use the name you choose during character naming.
- If you are discussing official confirmation: say that Hashino confirmed a system default exists but did not identify it.
