These systems were detailed by ATLUS and Xbox Wire in 2024; this is an explainer of those gameplay features, not a new 2026 announcement.
How does Metaphor: ReFantazio’s battle system work?
Combat moves between two connected modes: real-time field action and turn-based Squad Battles. The encounter’s threat level affects how you approach it. Weaker enemies can be defeated directly in the field, while stronger ones may call for a field strike followed by a Squad Battle. Catching an enemy off guard can give you an advantageous start, but enemies can also threaten you during the field phase.

Gallica can help scan enemies’ danger levels, according to Xbox Wire’s October 2024 launch guide. The guide also recommends surprise attacks and exploiting weaknesses to gain more actions. The available explanations describe the general combat loop rather than every battle rule or late-game exception.
What are Archetypes in Metaphor: ReFantazio?
Archetypes are the game’s job-like combat forms. Party members can use different Archetypes, allowing you to adjust their roles and build strategies around the fight. ATLUS described 14 basic Archetype lineages and more than 40 Archetypes in a June 2024 announcement. Ranking Archetypes through battle experience unlocks skills and supports progression into higher forms.

The selected Archetype also affects the weapon used during real-time combat, and its powers can be swapped across the party to suit a strategy, according to Xbox Wire’s launch guide. ATLUS’s showcase announcement covered combination techniques, skill inheritance, and changes to field fast actions as parts of the system: ATLUS, June 8, 2024.
Archetypes are also presented as magical armored forms that characters awaken as they confront their fears. A PlayStation Blog hands-on report compares aspects of their presentation with Persona’s summoning systems while noting differences; that comparison does not establish that the games share a setting or an identical mechanic.

How do travel, follower bonds, and the calendar fit around combat?
The Gauntlet Runner is both transport and base
The Gauntlet Runner travels across the wastelands to reach locations and serves as the party’s mobile home base and headquarters. Xbox Wire described its role in its April 2024 gameplay reveal.
Activities compete for limited time
Progression follows a day-and-night rhythm. Daytime can be spent on quests, dungeon exploration, and treasure hunting; nighttime activities include building relationships with followers and developing virtues. The choices use limited time, so choosing one activity means forgoing another opportunity in that schedule. ATLUS outlines this structure on its official game page.

Follower relationships connect to Archetype progression
Follower bonds are more than a separate social activity: Xbox Wire’s October 2024 guide says those bonds help awaken and strengthen Archetypes. That gives the calendar a direct link to combat development, alongside the time spent reaching and exploring locations.
