Monster Hunter World: Iceborne earned generally favorable reviews, and it is a substantial continuation of Monster Hunter: World. Whether to buy it depends first on what you own: the Steam expansion requires the base game, while Capcom announced a Master Edition bundle containing both. Check the platform and edition on the listing before purchasing.
What reviewers and players thought of Iceborne
Metacritic labeled the reception “Generally Favorable.” In the page snapshot accessed October 8, 2026, it showed an 89 Metascore based on 65 critic reviews and an 8.6 user score based on 598 ratings. These are separate measures from different groups; neither is a guarantee that every player will enjoy the expansion.
Steam’s listing snapshot, also accessed October 8, 2026, showed 78% positive English-language user reviews from 5,808 reviews. That is a Steam user-review signal, not a critic score. The figures can change over time, so treat them as snapshots rather than permanent ratings.
The excerpts surfaced on Metacritic include praise for the scale and additions, as well as a negative user response focused on frustrating features. The aggregates indicate a favorable overall reception, but they do not establish that every feature works for every player.

What the expansion adds
Capcom described Iceborne as a premium expansion that continues the story after the ending of Monster Hunter: World. Its announcement lists new quest ranks, moves, locales, monsters, gear, and a full narrative experience. That is the publisher’s description of the package, not an independent assessment of how well each addition works.
Capcom scheduled the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One launch for September 6, 2019. Steam lists the PC release as January 9, 2020. These dates identify the announced release timing for those platforms; check the exact platform and edition of any listing you are considering.

Should you buy Iceborne?
If you already own Monster Hunter: World
The standalone expansion is the relevant option to investigate. Steam identifies Iceborne as downloadable content that requires Monster Hunter: World. Confirm that the expansion listing matches your platform and the edition of the base game you own before buying.
If you do not own the base game
Do not assume the standalone expansion includes the original game. Steam’s prerequisite says it requires Monster Hunter: World. Capcom announced a Master Edition bundle containing the base game and expansion, making that bundle the product path to check if you need both. The announcement does not establish current stock, price, or availability in a particular format or region, so verify those details on the specific store listing.

If you are deciding whether to play the expansion now
Use the review reception and the scope Capcom announced as context, then consider whether you want a substantial continuation of the base game. The available sources do not quantify playtime, difficulty, or value at today’s prices, so those points cannot be settled by the review aggregates alone.
