If Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is lagging on your PS5, start by checking for game and system updates, then restart the console. Those are sensible first checks, but the available official guidance does not establish a guaranteed fix for gameplay frame-rate drops. TaleWorlds’ July 8, 2026, v1.4.7 notes specifically report faster PS5 save and load times—not a general fix for in-game lag.
Try these seven steps, starting with the safest
Work through the steps in order. The first three check for updates or clear temporary conditions; the Safe Mode options come later. Steps 4 and 7 are practical troubleshooting suggestions, not fixes confirmed by TaleWorlds or Sony for Bannerlord gameplay lag.
1. Check for a Bannerlord update
Highlight the game on the PS5 home screen, press the options button, and choose Check for Update. The installed game’s update process can also be viewed from its game hub. TaleWorlds’ v1.4.7 patch notes, published July 8, 2026, say: “Improved the save / load times on PS5.” They also list crash and visual-glitch fixes. Those notes do not say that the patch fixes general gameplay lag, so check for a newer update without assuming that installing it will resolve frame-rate drops.
2. Update PS5 system software
Check that the console has the latest system software through Settings > System > System Software > System Software Update and Settings. Sony includes system-software updates in its game troubleshooting guidance. Treat this as general PS5 maintenance, not a Bannerlord-specific performance fix.

3. Fully restart the PS5
Use the PS5 power menu to restart the console rather than only putting it into Rest Mode. Sony lists restarting among its game troubleshooting steps. It is a low-risk check, but Sony does not promise that it will produce a lasting improvement to Bannerlord’s frame rate.
4. Try a lower battle size or performance-oriented option, if available
If the installed version offers a battle-size or performance-related setting, try a lower or performance-oriented option. Not every option is confirmed to exist in every PS5 version, and the official sources cited here do not verify this as a Bannerlord PS5 fix. Change one setting at a time and compare similar scenes—for example, battles with roughly similar activity—so you can tell whether the adjustment makes a difference. Do not infer a specific threshold from a single encounter.
5. Clear the system software cache in Safe Mode
Sony says clearing the cache may help with system feature issues or performance drops. That is general PS5 advice, not a Bannerlord-specific remedy tested by TaleWorlds. To enter Safe Mode, turn off the console, then press and hold the power button until you hear the second beep. Connect the controller with a USB cable and press the PS button. Choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Clear System Software Cache. See Sony’s Safe Mode instructions for the available options.
6. Rebuild the database if the problem persists
In Safe Mode, choose Clear Cache and Rebuild Database > Rebuild Database. Sony describes this option as scanning the drive and creating a new database of system content. It is a troubleshooting step for system issues; it is not a confirmed cure for Bannerlord frame-rate drops. Rebuilding the database is not the same as resetting the console.
7. Record the symptoms and contact support; reinstall only if appropriate
If lag continues, note the installed game version and when it occurs: for example, in battles, sieges, or on the campaign map. Contact PlayStation or TaleWorlds support with those details. Sony’s game-start guidance includes deleting and reinstalling a game, but that advice addresses trouble starting games, not proven in-game lag. Consider reinstalling only as a later troubleshooting option, and make sure your save data is protected before deleting anything. Reinstalling is not a guaranteed performance fix.

What the official guidance does—and does not—show
- TaleWorlds’ July 8, 2026, v1.4.7 notes document improved PS5 save and load times and list certain crash and visual-glitch fixes. They do not promise that general gameplay lag is fixed.
- Sony’s Safe Mode guidance says clearing the system software cache may help with system feature issues or performance drops, and explains that Rebuild Database scans the drive and creates a new database of system content. These are general console troubleshooting options, not Bannerlord-specific cures.
- Sony’s game-start troubleshooting page recommends steps such as restarting, updating system software, reinstalling, and using Safe Mode. Because that page is about starting games, it does not establish that each step resolves frame-rate drops during gameplay.
Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord is listed as a PS5 game in the PlayStation Store. Buying another copy, a cooling stand, or an accessory is not an evidence-based solution to lag in an existing copy.
