What the Xbox 360 Store Shutdown Changed—and What It Didn’t

Microsoft ended new purchases through the Xbox 360 Store and Marketplace in July 2024, but said previously purchased games and DLC would remain playable. Here is what the shutdown means for access and preservation.

Microsoft stopped new purchases through the Xbox 360 Store on the console and the Xbox 360 Marketplace website on July 29, 2024. That closed two storefronts; it did not erase the Xbox 360 library or stop people from playing games and DLC they had already purchased. The preservation concern is narrower but real: when an official sales channel closes, commercial access to some older games can become harder to maintain.

What Microsoft shut down on July 29, 2024

Microsoft announced that new purchases of games, downloadable content (DLC), and other entertainment content would no longer be supported through the Xbox 360 Store on the console or the Xbox 360 Marketplace website. The change applies to those Xbox 360 storefronts—not every way to play an Xbox 360 game or access older Xbox content. Microsoft’s announcement set the closure date and described which services and content were affected.

Microsoft said previously purchased Xbox 360 games and DLC would remain playable. It also said hundreds of supported backward-compatible Xbox 360 and original Xbox games and DLC would remain available to purchase on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox.com. That continued sales route is limited to supported titles, not the full Xbox 360 catalog.

What owners can still do

Play content already purchased

Microsoft said players could continue to play Xbox 360 games and DLC they had bought before the closure. The shutdown was about new purchases through the specified storefronts, not removal of existing purchases.

Buy supported games on newer Xbox systems

Some Xbox 360 and original Xbox games are playable and purchasable through newer Xbox systems and Xbox.com. Backward compatibility is selective: Microsoft’s backward-compatibility information covers supported titles, not every game released for Xbox 360. Check the title-specific list before assuming a particular game will run on Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S. Availability can change.

Access Movies & TV purchases through supported devices

The closure also ended the Microsoft Movies & TV app’s functionality on Xbox 360, so TV and movie content could no longer be viewed on that console through the app. Microsoft said purchased content would remain accessible on supported Windows and newer Xbox devices, and eligible titles through Movies Anywhere. This media change is separate from the status of games and DLC.

Why a storefront closure raises preservation concerns

A game’s continued playability for existing owners is not the same as continued commercial availability to new players. When a digital storefront stops selling a title, one official route to obtaining it disappears. Whether another route exists depends on the game: some titles may be sold on newer Xbox storefronts, while others may not be supported there. A used physical copy may be an option for games that had disc releases, but its existence and availability must be checked title by title; a disc does not guarantee access to every DLC item or online feature.

The Video Game History Foundation and Software Preservation Network reported in 2023 that 87 percent of classic games released in the United States were out of print. The finding describes commercial availability across the study’s historical-game sample; it does not mean those games were destroyed or unavailable in every archive, and it does not measure the effect of the Xbox 360 closure. The Foundation’s explanation of the Game Availability Study sets out that scope.

The study repository record also reports that the reissue rate falls below 3 percent for games released before 1985. That figure concerns commercial reissues within the study’s historical sample, not Xbox 360 games specifically. The study record provides the accompanying context.

These measures help explain why closing a sales channel matters without implying that the games have vanished. Preservation includes more than whether a title is currently sold: it also involves whether copies can be accessed, maintained, and played. The shutdown is one example of how commercial access can narrow, not evidence that Microsoft’s decision caused the broader out-of-print rate.

How to check a specific game

  1. Check newer-console support. Search the Xbox backward-compatibility information for the title. Do not infer compatibility from its being an Xbox 360 release.
  2. Check purchase availability. If supported, look for the game on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, or Xbox.com; Microsoft said supported titles would remain purchasable through these newer routes.
  3. Check what you already own. For previously purchased content, use the account and console associated with the purchase to locate and play the game or DLC, subject to the supported service and hardware requirements.
  4. For titles unavailable digitally, check whether a disc version exists. A used copy may provide a route to the base game, but it will not necessarily include DLC or preserve online services.
