Cyberpunk began as a tabletop roleplaying game created by Mike Pondsmith and published by R. Talsorian Games—not as a video game. Its world moved from the tabletop editions Cyberpunk 2013 and Cyberpunk 2020 into Cyberpunk RED, then to CD Projekt Red’s Cyberpunk 2077, whose launch carried Night City to a much larger commercial audience.
How Pondsmith’s tabletop game began
R. Talsorian Games was founded in 1985. Its early catalogue included Mekton; Cyberpunk later became the publisher’s best-known line. The company identifies Mike Pondsmith as the creator of Cyberpunk and describes the game as helping bring the dark-future genre into roleplaying. R. Talsorian’s company history and Cyberpunk product page document that origin.
The line earned a specific early distinction: R. Talsorian lists Cyberpunk as the recipient of the 1989 Origins Gamer’s Choice Award for Best Science Fiction RPG. That is a documented award, not a measure of sales or audience size. R. Talsorian’s award listing
Why Cyberpunk 2020 mattered to the video game
Cyberpunk 2020 became the key tabletop reference point for the later adaptation. R. Talsorian describes it as the original roleplaying game of the Dark Future, and CD Projekt’s 2018 announcement placed Cyberpunk 2077 in the universe of the classic Cyberpunk 2020 pen-and-paper RPG system. The video game’s setting therefore grew out of an established tabletop world rather than simply borrowing the Cyberpunk name. R. Talsorian’s Cyberpunk page · CD Projekt’s 2018 announcement

Pondsmith’s role in adapting the world
In a February 2013 interview republished by R. Talsorian, Pondsmith explained what draws him to roleplaying: “I just like telling stories. Always have.” He added that gaming makes players active participants in stories, a creative possibility distinct from watching or reading a fixed narrative. Interview republished February 6, 2013
That interview also makes clear that his involvement with 2077 went beyond lending his name. At the time, he said he had participated in story and development conferences with CD Projekt Red, discussing mechanics, concepts, and plots. He described working out how the world could develop between the Fourth Corporate War and 2077. This is a dated account of his role in the adaptation’s development, not a description of his present-day work schedule. Interview republished February 6, 2013

How Cyberpunk RED connects 2020 and 2077
The tabletop chronology did not stop at Cyberpunk 2020. Cyberpunk RED is set in 2045, between the 2020 era and the 2077 setting; its core rulebook was released in November 2020. R. Talsorian says RED was developed with CD Projekt Red to keep the timelines and lore aligned. The publisher’s November 2018 update described the intended experience as letting fans move along a thematic path “from 2020 to Red to 2077.” Current Cyberpunk product page · R. A 2019 R. Talsorian FAQ likewise described a common timeline running from Cyberpunk 2013 through Cyberpunk 2020 and RED to Cyberpunk 2077, and identified Pondsmith as RED’s lead developer and primary writer. The FAQ is marked out of date, so it is useful as a record of the publisher’s 2019 account—not as a guide to current product details. R. Talsorian FAQ

The formats share a world and chronology, but they are not interchangeable experiences: a tabletop group’s roleplaying is different from a studio-authored video game. What “prominence” means in the game’s history
Cyberpunk 2077 launched globally on December 10, 2020. CD Projekt’s company history reports that the game sold 13.7 million units by the end of that year. That figure shows the adaptation’s immediate commercial reach; it is not a sales total for the tabletop games, the wider franchise, or Pondsmith’s personal work. CD Projekt company history
In 2025, CD Projekt Red promoted a REDstreams special with Pondsmith under the theme “From tabletop to digital streets of Night City!” and previewed a discussion of inspirations behind Cyberpunk 2013 and Cyberpunk 2020. The announcement confirms his continued place in the franchise’s public story, though it does not establish the full contents of the conversation. CD Projekt Red’s REDstreams announcement

Readers who want to play the current tabletop edition can begin with the Cyberpunk RED core rulebook. R. Talsorian lists physical copies through its webstore and digital copies through DriveThruRPG. The publisher also says Cyberpunk 2020 and its supplements remain in print, making the earlier game a direct route into the setting that informed 2077. R. Talsorian Cyberpunk product page
