If you mean moving a Mojang Java account to a Microsoft account, migration is no longer available. Minecraft says the migration period ended on December 18, 2023, and Support no longer handles migration-related requests. If you already use a Microsoft account and cannot launch the game, that is a separate sign-in or ownership problem you can still troubleshoot.
Can you still migrate a Mojang account?
No. Minecraft’s official migration period ended on December 18, 2023. The process was announced on October 21, 2020, but the old migration flow is closed; retrying it or contacting Support will not transfer an unmigrated account. Minecraft’s migration guidance also says Support no longer assists with migration-related queries.
What happens to an unmigrated account?
- Java Edition access: You can still have single-player worlds saved on your computer, but Minecraft says you cannot play them until you purchase Java Edition with a Microsoft account.
- Multiplayer identity: Joining an existing multiplayer world with a new Microsoft account creates a new player identity; it does not carry over the old account identity.
- Capes and skins: Minecraft says capes and skins associated with the old account cannot be recovered.
- Username: The old username may or may not be available.
Buying Java and Bedrock editions with a Microsoft account may let you play again, but it does not restore the old account’s cosmetics or identity. Minecraft’s migration guidance
If you migrated already, troubleshoot the current sign-in
A launcher that says you do not own Minecraft, or a missing Play button, does not by itself mean migration failed. First distinguish account access from game ownership and the launcher’s active session.

- Check which account is active. Sign in to the Minecraft Launcher and Microsoft Store with the Microsoft account used to buy Minecraft. The launcher can show no Play button if you are using a different account. Minecraft’s guide to the Play button not appearing
- Verify the edition entitlement. In the Launcher or Microsoft Store, check whether the relevant PC edition shows as owned or offers installation. - Confirm the purchase account. Check the purchase confirmation email or the Microsoft account’s order history. Minecraft also says signing into the Xbox app before Minecraft can sometimes resolve sign-in issues. Minecraft sign-in troubleshooting
- Recover account access if needed. If you cannot sign into the Microsoft account, use Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper and the recovery options linked from Minecraft’s account help. Get help signing into Minecraft with a Microsoft account
- Refresh the client session. If you are signed into the wrong account or the session needs refreshing, sign out and back in through the appropriate Minecraft client. Reset your Microsoft account sign-in in Minecraft
Should you buy Minecraft again?
Check ownership and order history first. Minecraft: Java & Bedrock Edition for PC was released as a bundle on June 7, 2022, but a purchase is not a way to reopen migration or recover old-account capes, skins, or identity.
