In Benzies’s view, open-world freedom can make some character stories harder to tell in the intended sequence. That describes the team’s design rationale—not a universal rule that open worlds cannot tell focused stories.
Why did MindsEye’s director choose a linear story?
Benzies described MindsEye as following a defined period in Jacob Diaz’s life, beginning when Jacob arrives in Redrock and ending later in his story. The developers wanted to control how that experience unfolds, rather than let players freely roam in ways that could interrupt its pacing or sequence.

As Benzies put it: “For Jacob’s story, it had to be a linear game.” He also argued that “certain stories are more difficult to present to players in an open world setting,” because the freedom of that format may not suit a story that needs to move through a particular character’s life in a set way. Those are Benzies’s reasons for this game’s structure, not a claim that open-world games cannot tell linear or emotionally focused stories. Insider Gaming’s June 1, 2025 interview reports his explanation.
What does “linear” mean for the campaign?
Assistant game director Adam Whiting described the campaign as a “tightly crafted linear narrative action-adventure.” In the studio’s launch-era framing, the story moves through a planned progression of action set pieces, with cinematic transitions intended to carry players from one moment to the next. The emphasis is on authored pacing and a connected campaign, rather than an open map built around unrestricted exploration. Whiting’s Epic Games Store interview discusses that approach.

Is MindsEye entirely separate from open-ended play?
No. The structure of Jacob’s main story is distinct from the game’s broader play and creation features. The official MindsEye site describes Arcadia as a place to access experiences and to build: players can create environments, design missions, script game logic, and share their work. The site also says new experiences arrive monthly. These tools and experiences do not change the stated linear structure of the campaign.
Feature names and availability have changed over time, so claims about a particular mode should be tied to platform and date. A November 5, 2025 PC Gamer report said Update 5 temporarily removed Free Roam on PC and that Play.MindsEye and Build.MindsEye were renamed Arcadia and Build.Arcadia there. That report does not establish the exact current feature set on every platform.

Why do people compare MindsEye with GTA?
The comparison is understandable because Benzies was formerly president of Rockstar North, the studio associated with Grand Theft Auto. But Whiting said the team wanted MindsEye to stand on its own rather than make a direct substitute for GTA. The games should not be treated as structurally equivalent simply because of that association: the relevant distinction here is a campaign designed around a specific story sequence versus a more open-ended style of play. Video Games Chronicle’s June 7, 2025 interview covers the comparison and the studio’s comments.
Did the studio plan to make MindsEye more open-world later?
In June 2025, Whiting discussed plans for ongoing content, multiplayer, and a possible later move toward a more open-world direction. These were statements of intent at that time, not confirmation that an open-world multiplayer mode shipped. The available descriptions of Arcadia and the PC update do not, by themselves, verify the present status of every planned feature or mode.

Is MindsEye open-world like GTA?
Its main Jacob Diaz campaign was described by its developers as linear, with a planned narrative and sequence of action set pieces. MindsEye also has separate play and creation features under the Arcadia name, but their exact current availability can vary by platform and has changed over time. So the clearest answer is: the story campaign is not designed as a GTA-style open-world experience, even though the wider game includes experiences beyond that campaign.
