The official Minecraft controls guide supports 12 practical tips below; it does not substantiate 18 distinct tricks, so this article avoids padding the list with unverified claims.
Safe movement and faster travel
1. Sneak near dangerous edges
Keyboard/mouse: Use the sneak key shown in your controls. Controller or touch: Use the corresponding sneak input in that control scheme. Sneaking prevents you from walking off edges, making it useful around cliffs, ravines, and other drops. Minecraft’s official controls guide specifically recommends it for exploring dangerous areas.
2. Sprint when you need to cover ground
Sprint inputs differ between keyboard, controller, and touch. Check the controls for your device rather than assuming there is one universal button; the official guide lists the separate actions.
Make controls fit your setup
3. Remap an awkward control
Open the options menu and change the control that is uncomfortable or inconvenient. Minecraft’s controls guide explicitly permits changing the defaults, which can help if your device or preferred layout makes a standard input hard to reach.

4. Restore defaults if you lose track of changes
If remapping leaves you unsure which action is assigned to which input, use the controls menu’s reset-to-default option. Treat the default layout as a recoverable starting point, not something you must keep permanently.
Hotbar and item handling
5. Select a hotbar slot directly on keyboard
Keyboard/mouse: Use the mouse wheel or number keys 1–9 to select a hotbar slot. This is quicker than cycling through several items when you need a specific tool or block.

6. Know the drop-item input before you need it
Keyboard/mouse: Q drops the held item. Controller and touch use different actions, so check the guide for your layout. Knowing the input can prevent a mistaken drop during combat or while moving through a crowded inventory.
7. Use the right action to interact
Keyboard/mouse: Right-click to use an item or interact with an object. Controller: Use the relevant use trigger. Touch: Tap the object. The exact action depends on your control method.

8. Open inventory with your device’s shortcut
The inventory input differs across keyboard, controller, and touch. Learn the shortcut for the device you actually play on instead of relying on instructions written for another setup; the official controls guide gives the respective routes.
Creative Mode building
9. Start flying with a double jump
In Creative Mode, double-tap the jump input to begin flying. The guide describes holding jump to move upward. This is useful when building above ground or moving around a large structure.

10. Use the correct descent input
Descent controls vary by control method. Check the controller, touch, or keyboard instructions for your setup rather than assuming the same input works everywhere.

11. Check redstone advice against your edition
Java and Bedrock redstone do not behave identically. Microsoft’s edition comparison notes that Java supports quasi-connectivity while Bedrock does not, and that some complex circuits and BUD-switch systems behave differently. A tutorial for one edition may therefore fail when copied into the other.

12. Verify command examples for Java or Bedrock
Command structure and implementation differ between editions, according to Microsoft’s comparison. Before copying a command, identify whether you are playing Java or Bedrock and check the relevant documentation; Microsoft maintains a separate Bedrock command reference.
Choose instructions for your device
The official controls guide separates keyboard/mouse, controller, and touch instructions. Microsoft’s edition comparison says both Java and Bedrock support mouse and keyboard; Bedrock also supports controller input and may involve touch depending on the hardware. Check the labels in a guide before following its button instructions, because an action described for one input method may not map directly to another.
