To make a spider-spawner XP farm, keep the naturally generated spawner in place, clear and secure its room, use water to guide spiders to a protected collection point, then kill them yourself to collect XP. The spawner is tied to its location, and the exact room dimensions and best containment layout depend on your Minecraft edition and version.
What the farm does—and what it does not do
A spawner is a local, recurring source of mobs, not a block you can pick up and relocate. Mojang says spawners cannot be obtained with Silk Touch. The same official overview describes a general spawner cycle of 10–40 seconds and spawn attempts at random points within about four blocks; those are general spawner mechanics, not a promised spider-farm output rate. Mojang’s spawner overview explains that sufficient light pauses a spawner, with the required amount depending on the mob.
This makes the farm convenient for collecting XP near a dungeon, but it is not a high-speed leveling machine. A reference tutorial characterizes spawner XP farms generally as relatively slow, and no measured XP rate is established for this particular spider setup. The mob-grinder tutorial also distinguishes player kills from automatic killing: if a crusher kills the spiders without your involvement, you do not receive their XP.
Prepare and secure the spawner room
- Confirm the spawner is for spiders. Spider and cave-spider spawners need different safety considerations; cave spiders are especially hazardous. Do not assume a layout intended for zombies will contain spiders reliably.
- Light the room while you work. Secure the dungeon and illuminate the working area before digging. Light pauses the spawner when the required level is reached, giving you a safer opportunity to build; the exact spider threshold is not specified by Mojang’s overview. See Mojang’s explanation of spawner lighting.
- Clear room around the spawner. Make space for spawning attempts and for a water route to move spiders toward the collection point. The available tutorial guidance supports this general approach, but does not establish universal dimensions for a current Java or Bedrock build. The spider-trap tutorial treats spider traps as a special case.
Route spiders to a protected kill point
Use water to push spiders toward a collection chamber where you can reach them with a weapon but remain protected from their attacks. Arrange the route and chamber to keep spiders contained; spiders can climb, so a simple open funnel may not behave like a generic zombie-farm channel. The available evidence does not establish one universally reliable chamber shape or exact block count.

#1 Best Overall
An in-place water funnel is a practical starting approach. A drop or lift can also be a design choice, but it should be checked against your edition and version rather than treated as a verified upgrade. Prioritize reliable containment, safe access, and a position from which you can land the final hit.
Reactivate the spawner and collect XP
- Finish construction, then remove or reduce the work lights. The spawner will resume only when its surroundings are dark enough for the mob it produces, according to Mojang.
- Stay close enough for the spawner to operate. The farm is location-bound: moving away from the dungeon means you are no longer using the spawner as an active local source.
- Let the water carry spiders to the collection point. Watch the first arrivals and adjust the route if spiders climb out, get stuck, or reach you.
- Deliver the final blows yourself. Player kills are necessary for XP; automatic deaths do not award you the mobs’ XP. The mob-grinder tutorial describes this distinction.
Check compatibility before copying a blueprint
Exact block dimensions, numeric spider-light thresholds, and current performance rates are not established here for either Java or Bedrock Edition. A creator video published in 2021 describes a Survival 1.16 design and claims it works in 1.20 and later, but that is the creator’s claim—not an official or independently verified guarantee for current releases. Check the video’s stated design and version context, then compare it with the edition and version you are playing before building.
Rank #2
A secondary tutorial excerpt lists 15 blocks as the cave-spider spawner activation range, but that figure should not be treated as a current guarantee for every edition or version. Verify activation behavior in your own game if your design depends on a precise distance.
