Yes—Mojang officially acknowledged a past Minecraft Launcher issue that caused some PC Game Pass subscribers to see only the Java Edition Demo. The issue record, MCL-19984, is marked resolved; it does not establish that the same bug is active today. If you are seeing Demo or a missing Play button now, first check that the same Microsoft account with the active subscription or Minecraft license is signed in across the Launcher and Microsoft Store.
What Mojang officially acknowledged
Mojang’s legacy issue tracker documented “Java Edition shows Demo with active Xbox Game Pass subscription.” The Minecraft team said: “The team are working on an issue that causes some players to only see the Demo version available in the updated Launcher.” The entry also advised affected players to use the Microsoft account associated with their PC Game Pass subscription. Read the MCL-19984 issue record.
The tracker marks MCL-19984 as resolved and lists these historical fix-version identifiers:
| Platform listed in the issue record | Historical fix version |
|---|---|
| Windows | 2.2.11103 |
| Mac | 2.2.11104 |
| New Windows App | 2.2.11105 |
| Linux | 2.2.11106 |
These are the versions recorded as fixes for that historical issue, not a statement of the Launcher’s current version or proof of a present-day recurrence.

Why the Launcher may show Demo or no Play button
A Demo listing or missing Play button can mean the Launcher is not recognizing the account’s entitlement. Minecraft Help says that the signed-in account may not own Minecraft and directs users to sign into both the Launcher and Microsoft Store with the account that owns the game or has PC Game Pass. See Minecraft’s missing Play button guidance.
For Game Pass access, check the Microsoft account that actually holds the active PC Game Pass subscription. For a purchased copy, use the account that owns Minecraft. A subscription or purchase associated with one account will not necessarily be recognized if the Launcher or Store is signed into another.

Official troubleshooting steps
- Verify the entitlement account. Confirm that PC Game Pass is active on the Microsoft account you intend to use, or identify the account that owns Minecraft. The historical issue specifically directed affected subscribers to the account associated with PC Game Pass.
- Refresh Launcher and Store sign-ins. Sign out of Minecraft Launcher and Microsoft Store, then sign in to both with the licensed or subscribed account. This is Minecraft Help’s recommended route when the Play button is missing.
- Check the Xbox app account too. For broader Launcher problems, Minecraft Help advises using the same licensed Microsoft account in the Launcher, Microsoft Store, and Xbox app. Its general troubleshooting also recommends uninstalling and reinstalling the Launcher to refresh its files. Read Minecraft Launcher troubleshooting.
- Try another official installation route if installation fails. Minecraft Help lists the Xbox app and Minecraft.net as alternatives to Microsoft Store installation. Even when installing from Minecraft.net, you still need to sign into Microsoft Store. See Launcher installation troubleshooting.
- Check for Launcher updates or contact support. Minecraft’s download guidance says to check for updates under Settings > About; it also directs users to Minecraft Support if the Launcher will not open. Open Minecraft’s download and support page.
These are official troubleshooting routes, not a guarantee that every current access problem has the same cause or will be fixed by these steps.

The official record confirms a historical problem and marks it resolved. Current Minecraft Help pages discuss account matching and Launcher installation troubleshooting, but they do not confirm that MCL-19984 has reopened or that the same defect is affecting subscribers now. Without a new official incident notice, a current Demo screen should be treated as an access problem to troubleshoot—not proof of a confirmed widespread outage.
