What is the enchantment-table language?
The symbols are the Standard Galactic Alphabet (SGA), a one-to-one substitution alphabet: each of its 26 glyphs stands for one English letter. It is a written alphabet, not a separate language with its own spoken vocabulary or grammar. Reference sources associate SGA with the Commander Keen series; that origin is not an official Mojang attribution. Minecraft Wiki’s enchanting-table reference identifies the symbols used in the interface as SGA.
SGA alphabet: glyphs and English letters
Use the chart as a key: find a glyph in the top row and use the English letter directly beneath it. The glyphs can be difficult to distinguish at small sizes, so enlarge the chart or compare a symbol carefully before substituting it.

How to decode the symbols
- Look at one glyph in the displayed string.
- Find that glyph in the SGA row of a complete A–Z key and write down its English-letter equivalent.
- Repeat for each glyph, keeping the same left-to-right order and spacing.
- Read the resulting English text. Because the system substitutes individual letters, you do not need a separate word-by-word translation.
What the decoded words mean—and what they do not
The readable words are randomized cosmetic text from a word pool. They are not the enchantment’s name, level, or a forecast of the result, and deciphering them provides no gameplay advantage. The Minecraft Wiki describes the displayed words as unrelated to the enchantment applied. See its enchanting-table reference.

Use the enchantment choice shown in the game interface, rather than the glyphs, to understand the option you are selecting. Microsoft Learn’s Bedrock-focused Introduction to Enchantments documents using an enchanting table with experience points and lapis lazuli, along with librarian trades and anvils as other routes involving enchantments. It describes enchantments as properties that improve an item’s existing abilities or give it additional abilities. The exact mechanics can vary by edition and version, so consult documentation for the version you play when you need specific rules.
