Yes—official Minecraft VR/MR support has ended for updates released after March 2025. Mojang’s Bedrock 1.21.40 changelog announced the cutoff and said players would receive a final update before later updates stopped supporting VR/MR devices. You can still play on a regular screen, and Mojang says existing worlds and Marketplace purchases remain accessible without VR.
What changed—and when
Mojang announced the broader VR/MR retirement in the Bedrock 1.21.40 changelog, posted 22 October 2024. It said VR/MR devices would no longer be supported in updates after March 2025, following a final update. The announcement does not identify the first stable build that removed support on every platform, so there is no verified single build number to cite as the cutoff across all devices.
The announcement followed an earlier, PlayStation-specific notice in Bedrock 1.21.30: updates after March 2025 would no longer support PlayStation VR (PSVR). That notice concerned PSVR; the later 1.21.40 notice covered VR/MR devices more broadly.
What still works without a headset
- On PC: Mojang says regular PC updates continue, and you can play without a VR/MR device.
- Worlds and purchases: Your existing worlds and Marketplace purchases remain available on a conventional display.
- On PlayStation: The PSVR notice says you can continue playing the game without PSVR, and retain access to Marketplace purchases.
Can you still play Minecraft in VR?
Not through Mojang’s official VR/MR support in updates after March 2025. A community alternative is Vivecraft, which describes itself as “VR Minecraft for SteamVR.” It is separate from Mojang’s official support. The project’s homepage does not establish compatibility for every headset or accessory, so check its current installation and device requirements before relying on it.

How Minecraft’s PSVR mode originally worked
Minecraft’s official PSVR launch article, published 22 September 2020, described the feature as a free patch for the PlayStation game. It required a PlayStation Camera and PSVR headset and offered two modes:
- Immersive: placed the player inside the world, viewed from the character’s perspective.
- Living Room: presented the game as a virtual screen rather than surrounding the player with the world.
The launch article quoted Minecraft Console Producer Damian Finn saying the main challenge was “ensuring player comfort when playing Minecraft in VR.” These details describe the original PSVR implementation, not a guarantee that the old setup remains a supported route today.
