If your Minecraft Realm appears to have rolled back, first check the connection and preserve a separate copy of the world before restoring or replacing anything. A backup restore returns the world to the state captured in that save, so builds and items added afterward can be lost. A Realm reset is different: it creates a new world, not a recovery of missing progress.
Start with safe connection checks
A rollback alone does not identify its cause. Minecraft’s official Realms connection troubleshooting recommends these checks:

- Sign out of Minecraft, then restart the game and sign back in.
- Install any available Minecraft update.
- On consoles, check that the required online-play subscription is active.
- Ask the Realm owner to close and reopen the Realm.
These steps address connection problems; they are not a guaranteed fix for progress that has already disappeared.
Protect a copy before restoring
If the platform’s current workflow lets you download the world, save a separate local copy before replacing or restoring the Realm. Check the candidate backup’s date or state so you know what progress it contains. The official Bedrock Realm restore guidance warns: “Restoring a world reverts all progress to what was captured in the save, including builds and items.” A restore may recover an earlier state, but anything created after that save can be lost.

A downloaded copy is a precaution, not a fix for Realm-side saving. Keep it somewhere with enough available storage; the exact download and restore menus can vary by edition and platform.
Restore a world and reset a Realm are different
Do not choose a reset as a way to recover missing progress. Minecraft’s Realms guide distinguishes downloading a world as a backup, restoring or replacing a world, and resetting the Realm to create a new world. That guide was published in 2017, so treat its menu instructions as historical rather than guaranteed current UI.

Check the right instructions for your edition and device
Realm workflows differ between Java and Bedrock, and cloud-save options may also depend on the console. Minecraft Help’s Backup & Restore index lists separate guidance for Java and Bedrock Realm restoration, plus cloud-save information for PlayStation and Xbox. Use the page matching your edition and platform rather than assuming one set of menus applies everywhere.

Contact Minecraft Help if connection checks do not resolve the issue or progress continues to roll back. Include your edition, device or platform, game version, whether you own or join the Realm, and the approximate time the rollback occurred. These details help distinguish the account, platform, and Realm context; the evidence available does not establish a current cause or incident for any particular player.

Server-side faults are one possible class of cause. A historical Bedrock release note records a February 9, 2021 fix for a Realms/Dedicated Servers crash that caused world progress to roll back. It does not show that the same bug is active now or explain a present-day rollback.
